i'm thinking about building up some 26" wheels for my Imperial. all around rims, you know? i don't really pay attention to rims much, so i'm pretty clueless. i was thinking Atomic DHRs, possibly, or the DeeMax rims (Mavic #s really lose me).

i'd rather them not be tanks, but somewhat strong, obviously. no tubeless stuff, either.

any recommendations?

also...20mm/QR convertable hubs...who makes them? Woodman? Hope?

granted 823s were a disaster, but you have to see the 729s i have been riding all season.

I blew one up at mt snow, blasted 10 spokes out of it, and still rode on it...slamed into the square edge of a rock in the high speed section off oen of those 2 little drops. continued full bore to the bottom.

Stik gave me spokes, i relaced, i continues to ride....4 more races in fact, including the ste anne world cup...

The wheel is anything but round...more like triangular with multiple flat spots, and now a missing spoke again. It also has 4 cracks in it from that original hit. IT IS STILL TRUE. Perfectly so.

I am riding it now as hard as i can, out of pure principle. I want to see how long it goes before it absolutely detonates.

721s got my vote for said purpose.
Yup, hard anodized Mavics(721 and 729) hold up better then anything I've seen in the same weight range. Unless you're running 2.7 or wider tires, the 721 should be perfect.

721s (or whatever the 521 is called now) if you have the cash, Ryno Lite XLs if you don't. No reason to get fancy or esoteric...'unique rims' usually suck (see: atomlab, white Halo rims, green doublewides). I like Tiogas, too, but they're hard to find.

Hope hubs are awesome, but diatech and a few other cheaper brands are making convertible hubs now, too...and I think they're the only intelligent option for a front hub these days.

That might be a long time Fraser. I've seen those rims go through hell and still keep rolling!

I flatspotted my 321 2 weeks after building it. Nailed a sharp edge with low pressure at high speed. It folded the sidewall into the body of the rim on booth sides. There were nasty microcracks all through the inside, it looked like a gonner.

I pulled out the section with a wrench, trued it and beat the tar out of it for another 2 seasons! I was floored that it was fine after such a wicked hit and hack fix. I tried to kill it at one point (drops to flat, running 10psi on Tunnel) and it still was very true. It still rolls to this day (different owner)

So to sum up what everyone has said, as well as reinforce what I was going to say at the beginning:
  • MavicEX729
  • Sun MTX
  • Atomlab DHR
  • Sun Singletrack
  • Mavic EX721
(In order of width, and strength for the most part)

YOU SOLD IT? BWAHAHA, that is awesome. I really want to try and kill this, only thing is i haven't heard the end of it yet.

Everyone keeps telling me i need to change my rim, it's a deathtrap etc. I laugh at them and their inferior products but at times i can feel the wobble, it gets annoying.

Now i am hedging my bets, every time a spoke comes loose, i remove it instead of tighten it. :p

Bah, It only a deathtrap if its a front rim :p

Yeah, that wheel went with the whole bike, I couldn't sell it by itself, I'm not that much of a di*k :p

Removing spokes, Bwahaha! that'll speed things up!

Ya I figure when i get to like 28 spokes or something it is just going to catastrophically fail. I mean, at some point, the mavic awesomeness will just decide it is time to surrender like all good frenchmen.

anyone know the width difference between the 721 and 729?

--edit--

or at least the width of the 721. that seems to be the front runner at the moment.

I truly believe that 721's are if not every bit as strong, at least 95% so as 729's.

I have had both and speak from personal experiences.

I think Mavic has the specs online...

28mm I believe (for the EX721), but that's just off the top of my head. The only reason I remember is because I remember it being one millimeter wider than my FRX, which was 27mm (I think).
I got rid of my EX721 front wheel because the tire I had on it (Mobster 2.5 50A) blew off 3 times, the third causing injury on a table on A-line. There was no reason (30+PSI, clean bead, no tube pinched in between rim and tire, no catastrophic impacts) it should have blown off like that, so I got a EX729 instead, and it's awesome. I only got it because I got a deal, otherwise I would have gone with the MTX, which is what I have on the rear and love (and it's a lot cheaper).

Mavic's naming system is actually super easy. The first digit denotes level of rim and whether it is tubeless or not. Lower the number the less nice in their line up it isor more XC oriented it is. Higher number= nicer rim/DH rim. Even numbers are UST Tubeless compatible Odd numbers are not. Th elast two digits denote the internal rim width. An EX729 for example is 29mm wide internaly between the sides of the rim. EX721, 21mm, so on and so on. It is actualy a pretty good little system I think. They definitely didn't do a good job of getting shop guys to elarn this, yet alone your average consumer. The chart I posted above should have all of the info you need, if not I'm sure their website has anything else. www.mavic.com

See my rim of choice is the D521's....but I am on a huge budget and need wheels in a bad way...so I am really looking at the outlaws. I would love to hear more about them from people who ride them?

The Atomlab DHRs are ok. I think they weight as much as the 321 or whatever they're called. So far my front DHR is holding up really really well despite my crunching over everything. My rear isn't fairing so well (one or two flat spots and not perfectly straight anymore) but I sum that up to my impatient wheel building. BTW, they're pinned, not welded.

After reading this, I think my next rim will be a 729. BUT, if I ever get another free doublewide, I'd use it in a second. Down in snowmass last weekend (or whenever that race was), I ended up with 26 spokes and a crack all the way through the rim, and it was still not terrible, I bet you could get down to 22 or 21 spokes before you had problems with that rim.

Hmm. Perfect thread. I've been wondering the same thing myself.

I personally have run Rhyno Lite XLs for the past 3 years, on multiple wheel builds. They've held up great.

Well, I sold that bike and now have a bike that has a wheelset with 321s on it (it's New old stock so yes they are the older 321s), but I'm wondering if I should sell that wheelset and get one with EX 721s instead? The Rhyno Lite XLs were 565g and they held up just fine for what I did. Both the Mavic's are heavier so I'm wondering if the 729s would be overkill and heavy on the XC rides.

Any thoughts from those who have owned both?

Get Sun cr-18's. :thumb: I rode a set for almost a year doing hardcore urban curb drops and riding down grassy hills and only had to true them after every ride. They get my vote for best rim ever, they're rim brake compatible too.
