who in their right mind believes they have the ability to unite those who oppose each other?

seems to me mccain should be elected if only b/c he's realistic enough to know there's a not-so-insignificant number of groups who exist because of their opposition & won't go away.

the situation really comes down to this: for a presidency to be defined by the differences between us & do something based upon it would effectively be like pre-war iraq: segregated.

or is there a different form of unity that doesn't involve submission?

Unity through ignorance and consumer sheep behaviour?
getting all strata to shop at the same mall may unite us geographically, but it also makes for a target-rich environment for a terr'ist attack.

Yeah, should have said ignorance and fear...

But when you're all so ignorant culling the heard really makes no difference. In fact maybe the government could plan 'terr'ist' attacks strategically to keep the economy running smoothly.
