Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
"We tell the worshipper of the cross (the Pope) that you and the West will be defeated, as is the case in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya," said an Internet statement by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella group led by Iraq's branch of al Qaeda, according to the Reuters news agency.

"We shall break the cross and spill the wine. ... God will (help) Muslims to conquer Rome. ... God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money and descendants the bounty of the mujahideen," said the statement.
We're working hard to prove the Pope wrong.

BTW, if anyone wants the transcript to the whole speech, it is here.

Although violence by the Muslim world over this is idiotic, I can see how some people might be offended by the Pope's words.

kinda like "i can see how fred phelps can be offended by homosexuals"? seriously, how thin-skinned does one have to be to want to actually kill someone who echoed an opinion by a 14th cen byzantine emperor?

All of this crap just makes me happy to be a member of a small, modest church where the biggest debate is over batting order in the cross-denominational softball league. Religion is less the issue than extremism and the sweeping generalizations by either side only provoke those too busy popping off to be bothered with thought.

Whoa there. Just because I said that I can see how someone would be offended doesn't mean that they have to go out and kill someone. Ratzinger quoted a Byzantine Emperor saying that Islam is evil, and it really didn't have to be in that speech. It didn't add anything to the speech. I can see how a Muslim might view that as a shot at his religion. It doesn't mean that Muslim should go out and kill someone, but (s)he could recognize it as insulting at least.

something tells me this guy probably did have more intent than just a "spitballing rabbit trail", if we can be honest. he may not be calling for another crusade, but he sure ain't leading a chorus of kumbaya either

i'll take it one further & say a muslim should view it as a shot against his religion.

next question of course is: "was the pope accurate & complete in his statement?"

Maybe he's looking back to his glory days in the Hitler Youth?

I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that maybe he just forgot to take that out of a previous draft of the speech or something.

Historically it is probably accurate that the Byzantine Emperor said that.

:disgust1: I heard on the radio last week that a local proprietor was shot and killed over a cheesesteak sandwich- A CHEESESTEAK SANDWICH- even after the money paid for it was refunded to the lunatic. That reminded me of this situation. If you value human life no more than a fvckin' grinder, be it halaal or not, sawing off a blue collar family man's head or shooting a nun in the back over a religious slight takes no great leap of logic. :disgust1:

What I don't get is how the west can at the same time vomit out apologies for this stuff (pope, cartoons, etc.) as if we've done something wrong everytime someone exercises some free speech but be completely unapologetic about bombing the living **** out of the middle east under false pretences.

Who do we think we're fooling? The actions speak louder than words about our true feelings towards arab muslims, and the words just make us look like backpedalling double-talkers. Grow some spine, and stand up for free speech. Educating the world (including ourselves) that democracy is not freedom from being offended is important.

It would also be helpful if our comments were specific to extremist muslim clerics and not the whole of the religion... but that's nitpicking.

The reality is that the extremist clerics ARE completely out of control, and appeasing them with ridiculous apologies does a disservice to the West and moderate Muslims, and empowers exactly the radicals that we need to disarm.

Free speech is less important than bombing the hell out of people. You remember the post from a couple weeks ago with the reports from FBI agents who sit and watch scat porn all day?

The odd thing is, these dumbass Muslims have a lot in common with the Pope. They don't like Jews or fags too much, and have little use for secular/rational philosophy.

It would be great if we could get them all in a room at the same time and have them re-enact the ending of Reservoir Dogs.

also, here's a condensed version of his inflammatory comments we haven't yet seen:

That's gold!

We [Catholics] might **** little kids, but at least we don't strap bombs on them when we're done and drop them off at the bagel shop. Sure, we treat our women like ****, but if we made them all dress like fat ninjas, there wouldn't be a single full pew in the whole ****ing world.
