Alternate cable routing...

Has anyone here used a full-length run of cable for a derailer?

I'm building up a bike for my cousin, but the brake braze-ons are for hydros, and he's running Avid mech's. So I'm thinking I can use the front derailler stops to create tension in the brake housings, then run full housing down to the FrDr stop. But I'm not sure if there will be too much slack in the housing for crisp shifts.

It should work but the more housing the more friction. It's just a matter of where you want the extra friction in the brakes of the front mech.

If the front mech cable can be routed ok then use the full houseing on it.

To me, front derailleurs are nothing, they do hardly any work, and it doesn't matter how gummy they feel, or how much they rattle, condition and performance doesn't matter, as long as it can shift.
Sure, using a full cable length will make it feel like crap, but shouldn't reduce performance at all. If you were considering running a full outer for the rear, then I'd slap you :p but for the front it should be fine.

Yeah, 86 the slappings!:p

I routed it all last night, and it works fine, I'm just a little concerned about the housings staying put over gnarly terrain, but a few zip-ties should remedy that.

Now it time to overhaul MY bike!! :thumb: I'm hooking this thing up...with a new Romic for the cherry on top!;)

Just run full length housing for the brakes thru the hydro guides and you'll be fine. Ran that on my Surly and it works without a hitch.

I did at first, but I really didn't like the feel on the lever return. I'd rather have the frdr make the sacrifice (which didn't even turn out to be the case) than the brake.

I doubt running them as you describe will change much...if it's that bad, I'd just make sure I lubed the cables real well in the housings and ziptie the housings tight to the frame.

Or maybe try the Full Metal Jacket lines, which are designed for the cable brakes...might improve the lever snappiness.

Actually, by using the two stops for the frdr on the top tube, I can get perfect tension on the break run.

I am considering the Avid Jackets on the next go round, but its all set for winter duty right now.
Thanks.
