Yeah, As I alluded to in the other thread, if the government bought shares in every American business they would go a significant way to cutting the tax burden. I think there may be some conflict of interest though...

well, that's not completely true. I mean it could operate 'private' for-profit businesses, yeah?
It could, but that's getting out of being a government and into private business. And unless it's big businesses to bring in a lot of money, then I don't see it working.

You mention schools, but our schools are already state-owned, and still have to be federally subsidized just to stay in operation.

High sales tax like WA. When I moved from there it was at 8.5%. There's also other taxes and fees floating around for dern near everything.

Also Biggins, if you went to a federal sales tax (I know thats where you're headed) the rich would pay almost nothing %-wise in comparison to the poor. =not fair.

What are you talking about? Tons of Americans get healthcare. State funded insurance in TN (Tenncare its called) is either HEAVILY reduced or free altogether for the elderly/children.

I'm moving to TN when I get old, break something at Windrock and get it fixed for free. Noice!

Like I said, they slashed a ton of it. I dont think it's totally free unless you're dirt/dirt poor and on social security or unless youre a single, poor mother with 12 kids. Dont quote me though.

The answer to that is a tax rebate every quarter of, say, $1000 to everyone. Just a random number, but that way, the poor don't pay much and the $1k doesn't mean much to the rich.

Nevermind then, a sex change and a lot of adoptions don't sound too fun to me.

so with the federal sales tax the rich would pay less? is that because it would seem like they are paying less since they have so much money? for example....if i go buy a loaf of bread and it has a 23% tax and a rich person buys a loaf of bread the tax they pay is still 23% right?

We spend more government money on healthcare per capita than Canada, France, and the UK do...

Yes, but you have to understand. 5% of the people (the very rich) pay something like 95% of ALL taxes in this country. So if you do it that way, you lose most of your tax income.

So technically you're not actually paying taxes then either. In fact, you've been profiting at least $300 the last couple years :busted:

You're going to have to find a source for that...and tell us which tax you're talking about.

edit:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/03in03tr.xls

Tax returns with an adjusted gross income of 1 million and up paid a total of 134.4B in income tax, while AGI from 50,000 to 200,000 paid 358.7B in income tax.

I'm not sure if those numbers include SS and Medicare taxes...and if they don't, that's going to be a huge shift away from the top end, due to the cap on SS taxes.

The top 5% according to tax returns is the 100,000 and up earners (approximately.) They account for 61% of the total income tax paid.

It's funny how people complain about taxes and call for things like a "flat tax" that would benefit the rich.

Most people pay little tax by comparison to those who really do.

Here's what I found. I was a bit off, but Id regularly heard that. Still, the bottom 50% of the nation pays very, very little.

no i pay into it for everyone else to use it........has anyone explored tougher immigration laws to help lessen the tax dollars being spent on every service offered by the US government? i mean welfare, healthcare, education and all the other services that are supported by our tax dollars but being flooded by illegal immigrants that dont pay taxes?

Just out of curiosity, what do you think the rate on flat consumption tax with no exceptions would have to be to be revenue neutral. (That's no exceptions, not on food, housing, medical care...nothing. You're paying tax on everything you buy.)

Or to put it another way, what would you be willing to pay on every purchase to get rid of income taxes totally?

That's retarded. All due to increased medical costs because of litigation? Or other factors?
http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/reprint/22/3/89.pdf

CN: many factors are involved. a few of them: we have higher pay for health care workers throughout the chain; fewer hospital beds per capita; more fancy tests such as CT/MRI and procedures; probably a sicker population in terms of unhealthy lifestyle habits; along with a a disorganized and administration-heavy insurance system with little leverage in terms of purchasing power.
