Does the phrase "amateur world championships" strike anyone else as an oxymoron? So it's an arbitrarily decided level of "world champion" who isn't actually the fastest person...
There are no longer world titles given out for for masters racers for instance, it is called the "world challenge" and it is a freaking joke. Same goes for every other discipline of cycling. The only legit world championships (white jersey) are for Juniors, U23 and "Elite" for men and junior and elite for women.

Which is why I do not understand why they no longer hold a masters world championships. Those guys deserve to wear the rainbow jersey just as much as a U23 guy does in my opinion. I allways wondered why they never held a Junior 4X at worlds. And why is there no U23 class for dh if they are going to make such a big deal out of it for xc and road?

i think the u23 on the road and in xc has more to do with the fact that it takes years and years to build the level of fitness that is needed at a world cup level in those forms of racing. most fast roadies and xc racers are in their 30's or close to it.
dh would be silly to do this, as it is the type of sport where the youngest riders are the fastest. these days it seems like 23 is the prime age for dh if not younger (rennie, hill, athertons, hannah, minnaar, atkinson, graves, etc are all 23 or younger). it is bad enough that juniors are forced to race that catagory at worlds even though some are competitive at the senoir level (hill two years ago comes to mind, and anne-caroline back in the day).
i agree though that it would be sweet to see a junior 4x worlds. if they are going to spend all this money to build the track for worlds they should use it for more than two races.
i also like the fact that there was a masters worlds. masters are masters, pros are pros, so there is no problem having two titles (amateur just sounds lame). i think the problem was keeping the pros out of the masters worlds though. i know they said anyone who raced world cups was not eligable, but from what i have noticed, that was not always enforced to the fullest. maybe calling it "amateur" will help them to keep the playing feild a bit more level.

If you win the Master's Worlds, you do get a rainbow jersey. An Expert rider can wear it at a national, a pro can not. Ask Joe Lawell (sp?) about that.
And if you did win the Master's, you get props from me since the guys that have won the past few years have: podiumed at UCI World Cups, top 3 Norba points rankings, won the X Games, etc. The top 10 guys in the 30-39 at the master's are fast. These guys do good in the pro class at nationals. It's intimidating riding with these guys for the first time. But if your a fast expert, you will love the practice since there are no back ups at every semi technical section of the course.
No, because age becomes a big factor there. It's fairly simple, most 17yr olds just aren't going to be as strong or balanced as someone like Rennie; they're just not developed like that. It's the same reason you separate the guys from the girls too; men are naturally stronger and for various other reasons, invariably faster down the hill. Personally I couldn't care less about Masters Worlds (although if the minimum age limit is only 30, that's rediculous - it should be at least 40 IMO), age DOES become a restriction as you get older. I mean, you have the Veterans/Masters/Super Masters classes at normal races, which takes that into account... it does make sense to have WCs for at least some of them IMO.
