About 4,315,000 children were born in 2007, about 15,000 more births than the peak time of the baby boom in 1957, said Stephanie Ventura, a demographer at the National Center for Health Statistics, which compiled the data from provisional birth certificate registrations at state health departments.
It will be interesting to see the birth rates for 2009, I would suspect it would be less as the economy continues a downward spiral. My wife and I are waiting to have kids, and I'm thankful....we don't have much money left over after paying the bills these days

Stupid article. Birth number mean little as the population is significantly higher, birth rate might actually mean something.

Edit: Peak birth rate was about 24 children per 1000 of population during the baby boom. Current rates seem to be about 14 little parasites per 1000. Current death rate is about 8 corpses per 1000 so we are growing around 6 morons/thousand a year.

Ummm......I'm not a statistician or anything.......but given the increased population from the baby boom in 1957, isn't 15,000 more births in 2007 pretty low in comparison? Maybe even below average if birth rates were taken to be somewhat parabolic with respect to population/time?

EDIT - Westy stated what I was thinking....only made it sound logical.:)

why are you guys cluttering this thread with facts, and statistics? :p I still think it will be interesting to see the birth rates for '08,'09 versus '06/'07

I like the "one kid per household" action they have in China.

Prove you can support more than one and you will be taxed MORE for it, but be allowed to breed. Otherwise, not so much.

Compared to most other countries in the OECD I think America's population growth is quite a bit above average. You can't just factor in natural growth anyway, must include immigration. I know in Australia immigration is at an all time high, suspect you guys are similar.

We are, I read an article a while back that the pop growth in the U.S. is mostly because of immigration...us natives don't have enough kids
