I use to play it when it first came out and it was pretty fun, then the script kiddies came out en masse and ruined the game with hacks and cheating.

It was a fun game otherwise.

It's a fun game, but the specs got so high my computer couldn't run it anymore. I like those more realistic simulations like Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon, and this. Once you get past training, it's a lot of fun. Just prepare to get raped. As far as being made by the US Army, it's meant for recruitment, and I doubt it's worth the money they put into it.

Frankly, when it comes to free gaming, I will even participate in a US Military giveaway.

Feeling the lag
I am so relieved that my geek quotient is too low to have any idea what all these acronyms mean. Because I work in IT it's nice to find a group of people who take geekiness to a whole other level and allow me to feel normal.

Thanks guys.

I thought it was a good game, but the military spent WAY too much and it hasn't sucked in the kids like they thought it did. I like it because I have the Army team designator when I use my official Army email address :D

Wait, so did tax payers money go into the development of this video game then?

You thought it was free? Oh hell no, EVERYONE chipped in on that bad boy. It was one of the largest video game budgets of all time if I recall correctly.

It's a recruiting tool that came directly out of defense spending.

Wow, I didn't know that. Personally I have a probem with how subliminal a recruitment device that is. I know that Army commercials have Disturbed or whatever it is blasting in the background and they instill the idea of "An Army of One" which from what I have heard from military folks is exactly the opposite from how the Army wants you to think, but that is a pretty direct form of recruitment IMHO even if it is glorified to high heaven.

So does anyone know if the sales or portion of sales of the game, go back into the defense industry?

The game is free to download.

As for a recruitment tool, I would bet that it is as successful in that role as Grand theft Auto is at turning kids into hardened criminals.

At least you don't have to sign a contract to be a criminal though :D

I have no idea how the new one I saw the comercial for it set up. I'm guessing the proceeds from sales go to the developers, so it's a form of double dipping. They have a contract from DoD to develop it as a recruiting tool, then they sell it on the open market and get at least a portion of the sale.

I'm in the wrong business, that's for sure.

$50 for Xbox, and I bet the same if they have it for the PS2.
Wow, crazy... I remember seeing the original version for PC's in the stores for $20. Although the licensing and markup on console games is way over inflated, to make up for selling the hardware at a loss. Any profit that is left over I sure would go back to the developer and (Hopefully) re-invested into the program.

You are aware of what Top Gun did for Navy recruitment numbers? (and actually Air Force too, I believe...)

Don't forget "Navy SEALs". Seemed like every jackass in my bootcamp company was joining to be a SEAL after that turd sandwich. None of them made the qualifying cut (but I wouldn't have either had I tried).

But I think a movie is more motivating than a video game. I also theink the target audience is different. Most hard core gamers I know can't do 5 push ups.

I thought that game sucked. I played all through the training and spent a couple of hours online, then went back to HL.

How realistic is it? I'll bet they "stack the deck".....like, you can be shot 205 times before it slows you down etc....
No, it is stacked against you. You can be shot up to 3 times depending on what shoots you and where. Plus it is hard as hell to control your own weapon.

I downloaded and played it last night, it is fun but it can be frustrating.

nope, you can definitely get taken out with one shot, more if you're lucky.
