Gas Prices Taking Priority in Campaign

By CALVIN WOODWARD, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - It's the presidential campaign season, gasoline prices are climbing, and the challenger is demanding that the president get more oil on the market and stop foreign suppliers from "holding our nation and our consumers hostage."

So it went in 2000, with the Republican challenger George W. Bush accusing a Democratic administration of failing Americans by letting prices go so high. Today, not much has changed — except Bush is president and prices are higher still.

By several broad measures, the cost of a gallon of gas has hit record-breaking heights. By any measure, prices have entered a political discomfort zone that could become combustible if the summer driving season puts yet more pressure on the expense of getting around.

In a round about way, it is Bush's fault.

OPEC is mainly run by Bush hating Arabs and socialists like Chaves in Venezuela.

This is their attempt to run up inflation and slow the economy to harm Pres. Bush's chances at re-election.

Remember, what is bad for America is good for the Dim's.

LOL, Tin foil hat plz...

But hey it worked for Bush to blame Clinton/Gore, I mean why doesn't Dubya just get on the horn with Opec and say "We expect you to open your spigots."

America should be leading the world in technologies to reduce the use of gasoline for transportation, but, you've got bush, who in turn is paid for by people who make their money elling oil and can't see far enough into the not-particularly-cloudy future to start investing in alternatives.

'ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME...oh f*ck.'

Euro, China and Japan ARE doing things about it. All of these countries ARE commited to reducing output of carbon emmisons, even China. Japan is doing a very nice line in Zero emmision vehicle research. Big euro car manufacturers like BMW are commited to producing hybrid and eventually fuel cell powered cars. Honda is doing it too.

and WTF do you mean 'Why?' - Uh, the future sustainability of our planet?

I am a 'basher' in every thread because from where I'm standing there's a lot of sh*t being done to the world and it needs sorting out.

Because you're the largest economy in the world? Because you give a sh*t about the planet? Because the US dosmestic market affects the world markets so much? Because US industry, if so directed could make a HUGE difference in the field? Because it's the right thing to do?

because they are the bigget oil consumer, yet most of their oil is imported.
is kinda dangerous not to have a hold of the frying pan by the handle.

I dunno, I guess. But if you ask me...gas is still relatively cheap. The trout still bite. My favorite trail doesnt have a condo on it and my jeep wont run off a solar panel. If or when, we do run out of oil we'll come up with something...or the japanese will. I dont think its that big of a deal.

Did you know that America uses 25% of the world'e energy output and produces 25% of the world's carboniferous gas output? (yet America has only 2% of the worlds population) That means for every man woman and child in America 5.5 tons of Carbon is released in to the atmosphere! How old are you? Multiply that by 5.5 Tons! Imagine that much Carbon. The top 2 causes of this polution are 1) Industry and 2) Automobiles.

Scientists already contend that we have passed an irreversable point in global warming. Dependant if you listen to optimistic or pesimistic scientists, we're due a 1m - 6m rise in sea levels in 50 years. Acid rain has already been the cause of hundreds of thousands of acres of forest death. More species have died in the last 50 years than for 10,000 years.

It is too late to be saying it's not a big deal. We really needed to be making changes yesterday. :(

i think is a big problem if you run out of oil.

if its progressive, then the cost of the change can be managed easier, than in an overnight change.

plus, if the US is less dependable on oil, is better in strategical terms.
its better for the US, because it can declare war on whatever country they want and kill whatever arabs they want, without fear of OPEP represalies. or shortage problems or whatever.
