My kid is 14. She is essentially on lock down for a couple years.

Seriously.

No internet access unless we're home.

No friends in the house if we aren't home.

No going anywhere after school till homework is done, and then we make sure we know EXACTLY where she is at all times.

It's pretty simple, just stay aware and don't trust your kid to make the right choices. You can trust them to know the difference between right and wrong, but you can't trust them to make the right choice! There is just way too much out there for kids to deal with.

I lucked out, really. Smart kid, straight A's without breaking a sweat.

She was living with her mom until 4 years ago when I got full custody. Her mom (my ex, we divorced in 97) was f*cking up big time. I got my kid out of a really bad, abusive situation. (mom was smoking speed, filthy house, other criminal activity that I can only guess at...)

We pulled her out of there (with the help of child protective services) and got her into therapy.

After I was given full custody her mom essentialy f*cked off. We haven't heard from her in almost three years. We consider her lost for good.

So the positive thing here is it's not hard to convince my kid that drugs are not a good idea. Sad but positive in the long run.

well, it was the end of a long blog post in which he discussed the problem at length.

short story: American kids are getting fat. As they get fat they are less attractive to sketchy guys and potentially each other. Maybe this is actually a good thing...

oh, and he's a physicist, hence the eq...
Trouble is it's all relative - the same percentage of girls will be attractive cos there's only so many to go around, they'll just be fatter.

After all if fat people never got laid the US population would be declining rapidly.
