Another low rise option for 888's

Found this while checking out the dangerboy site the other day

-10 degree rise 67 or 50 mm stems. The 67mm stem will lower your bar by just under an inch when replacing the 888 integrated stem. Unfortunately you need to run at least one spacer to use the 51mm stem with the stock upper crown. They come in 25.4mm and 31.8 mm. MSRP is 125 cdn.

I've got one ordered that should be in in a week or so. I'll post up picks when I get it in. I'm not a big fan of the looks of the stem...it reminds me of a roadie stem...but it's function over fashion for me.

I was going to get a set of lowrider crowns but I wasn't sure whether I wanted to steepen the front end up on it any more so I'm going to try this stem out first. I'm still considering getting a set of lowriders as well...I haven't decided on go-ride or risse yet though.

check out http://www.dangerboyusa.com/stems.php for more details.

They've got some sweet low stack height stems available as well. My buddy just picked up an ak47 from them and is is really nice.

But it doesn't change the handling charactoristics since the front end is still high. I still recommend it be lowered, I also used a Thompson 50 x 0, even before the lowering crowns and it wasn't near enough.

It'll definitely change the handling characteristics because your hands will be an inch lower. It won't change the head angle but on some newer bikes where the bike was designed with a 888 in mind you may not want to change the head angle. My aim is to get my hands as low as possible while still having the head angle I want.

As I said I'm considerig getting the crowns as well so that I can play with both.

I've got 1.5" rise bars.

Who makes 1" rise dh bars. Is eastons ea70 "low" rise 1"?
EA70 low rise is really shallow, I am running them on my XC bike and it almost looks like a wide, funky shaped flat bar. Definetely a good choice if you want to bring the front end of your bike down.

:thumb: Love the EA70 Low risers...definitely my bar or choice for this year.

If they only made 'em in 31.8...

I'm actually running a negative-rise stem with my 2" bars on my RFX. It's sweet-lookin'.

Yeah, that's pretty cool but like others have said, for most people the bigger issues are changes in head angle, bb height, and wheelbase, none of which are fixed by a negative rise stem. I don't know anyone who thinks their geometry is spot on with the stock 888 crowns but just wants lower bar height...but I don't know you...

I hear you but I'm sure there are others like me who don't want there head angle and bb messed up by the low rider crowns.

here's a pic of my 2004 team dh.

The head angle is around 65 and the bb is at 14".

The problem is not that lowrider crowns might mess up the HA and BB measurements, it's that, for most frames, the 888 messes these up with the stock crowns. The 888 is taller than OTHER mfr's 8 inch forks, not just 7 inch marz forks.

Also, Truvativ makes the Holzfeller risers in 25mm (1 in) rise at full width.

As I've said a few times already I understand this, as it seems does everyone else who've responded to this thread. The part that people seem to be having a hard time with is that some 2004 and 2005 bikes have been designed with the tall 888 in mind so the head angle, bb height and wheelbase aren't a problem with the 888 and stock crowns. However the ride height or handlebar height is a problem because the 888 is so tall. This is why for some people the low rider crowns aren't necessarily a good solution but negative rise stems and/or low rise bars are an option to lower your handlebar height.

Thanks for letting me know about the holzfeller.

I guess I was under the impression that the 888 was about an inch higher than most 8 inch forks...and since most frames are designed now with an average 8" fork in mind (Boxxer etc)...that would make it an inch too tall. Whatever, not a big deal.

I have the same bike mate, changed the stem to 50mm thomson and a pair of low rise ea70s. Did the job nicely. But I still wasn't happy as I prefer the sweep on the protaper bars, so I have sold the forks, so I can get the right bars. Its rediculous. But bring on the 40!

If the frame geometry was designed around the use of an 888 then the stem will do the trick of lowering the hand position nicely....

Yeah it's funny, it seems that Norco is one of the few companies that built bikes last year specifically with the stock 888 in mind, so good for you banj, glad you found a fix. That also could explain why recent Norco's have always looked so tall and cramped in the top tube to me.

Nice build J5ive!!! You rocking that thing in the 7.4" position? How you liking that? What weight spring are you using and how much do you weigh. I'm thinking of replacing my rims with mtx's as well...or a set of 521. We'll see how the singletracks hold up.

hehe, I didn't know about the typo on the linkage plates for the first month or riding. Didn't look twice at the darn thing. Definatly better in the 9". I have a 450 spring with 90kg. You?
