So, er, yeah...the Pixies. How 'bout 'em?
Saw the first show over the summer at the Coachella festival here in California, under the desert sky...and a second show the other week here in coastal San Diego. Fvckin' amazing shows, both...but seeing them up close in a college gymnasium was just mind-blowing. No time for stage banter, aside from the occasional Kim Deal cutesy syllable or two. Just song-into-song-into-song, with Black Francis at his best howling and Joey Santiago at his most impassively noisy, mega-rocking guitar wailing. Solid wall of sound for what must have been a 30-song set. Pretty much every Pixies song you'd have wanted.
Even the lights were kind of neat.
See 'em if you can while they're back together. This isn't any lame-o Jane's Addiction reunion.
