Probably just on the plate which was separate for easy cleaning.

Ah, I didn’t clock it was so small. Some friends have a different type of butter dish where you fill it with water to keep it at a good temperature. Could be that.

Right - is plated silver-on-stainless. Is reason for the grey color.
