Oh pinkbike...

I love their exclusives, like the Fox and Marzocchi fork stuff recently. I really enjoy product reviews and previews. I'm able to find out info on stuff that hasn't been reviewed on RM or elsewhere. I agree with Udi, the photos can be a godsend when I'm looking for weird stuff. Just recently I was looking for photos of Kali kneepads to check for fit, and pinkbike had a few that I could judge against. Same with weird bikes whenever I come up with a crazy idea (like converting a bike to a 29er). I don't bother with the forums as the discussions are by and large useless with no significant conclusions to be drawn, besides everybody go home and stop dropping off of ladders in your backyard.

I have a hard time with RC and some of the other reviewers. RC comes from a "I ride trailbikes in the SoCal desert" background, so it's hard to take his reviews seriously. That was always a problem I had with MBA in general, and though he's trying to break free, I still see it from time to time. He occasionally likes some really weird **** that doesn't make sense unless you're riding dust and hardpack, like the southwestern desert. Some of the other guys do better, but his "regionality" is especially glaring.

Sicklines is one of my favorites. They have some excellent, reasonably unbiased reviews and I wish the site got more press/references than it does. It has a US, grassroots feel/focus to it, and I love that, compared with the all-WC Vital and BC based NSMB. Great weight collections too.

I'm not a fan of vital. Their slideshows are great, and they occasionally have neat features, but the site is confounding from a usability standpoint. I like pinkbike's layout- you head to the mainpage and everything is there, even if it's videos I don't want to watch, or product reviews I'm not interested in, I just scroll on down till I see something I like. Plus, vital seems to be the collector for holier-than-thou fanboys.

I love RM, and it's the community that makes it worthwhile. Even the fanboys get taken down a peg here, and you can generally ask questions without immediately getting called a moron or being told to buy [whatever is the popular product right now]. Virtually everything on here is user opinion from people who have actually used the product.

The one thing I would like to see from the main page is more unfavorable reviews. I know that sounds silly, but I hate reading every review and having it be favorable, with love and bro-hugs all around at the end of it. Face it, every once in a while, a product sucks, or maybe it at least has downfalls. I don't feel like I've read a review that has concluded with "By and large, this ______ disappoints, and is not worth the notoriety/price." I also like the blurb-reviews that PB has been doing recently, with small, short reviews about products the writer likes or is disappointed with. I'm sure the reviewers @ bike have their favorite set of tires or knee pads, or grips...once in a while, have them write a review about why they use those products. When I go to buy x or y, I'm more inclined to try out or avoid something that's been reviewed. Another thing that would be great is reporting on races and events that are otherwise uncovered. The DH WC sees a **** load of press....RM doesn't need yet another reporter providing half-assed covereage, but I'd love to see articles on local races, like the GRT or NEMBAfest or similar, and I LOVE reading articles like this: http://www.pinkbike.com/news/BC-Cup-racers-are-running-2011.html.

+1 even back in the day when i used to waste valuable seconds of my life reading MBA (talking early 2000's) it seemed the product reviews and opinions were so biased towards desert/so cal stuff that it was primarily useless to me. I don't particularly like his contributions to pinkbike. Around her we have rocks, logs, slime and lots of other stuff to deal with. Gotta mix it up if you are writing a review for an entire continent.

I'm working on getting them to run more negative reviews. It's going to take some time. They have a lot of relationships, and I agree, there has been some "questionable" reviews. But it's definitely getting better, and I am doing my best to call them out on it when I see it. Remember, if you have an issue, email them, let them know. The owners are level headed and want to make the site better (hence all the hiring of guys like sterl, rc, myself etc.)

They just have to be made more aware that if they get the buddy cup stigma that a lot of magazines have, they will lose the credibility they have fought hard to earn.

I'm doing a lot of product test stuff with them now, but mostly longer term things that we'll see going live in the next few months.

See here for negatory, good buddy.

Have you seen this? http://www.sicklines.com/reviews/specialized-stumpjumper-fsr-expert-evo/

Amazing freakin review! R/C Helicam action footage! Are you kidding me! Jason and his crew take real time and put forth serious effort to provide extensive information. I'm pretty sure they have no where near the bankroll that some of the big boys do yet they are absolutely killing it in the reviews dept. and like you said, not getting enough attention. I would like them to focus on the reviews since that is what they do so well. Let the other guys battle it out for the mass-content race.

That review stirred a ton of idiotic conspiracy theories about the brand fanboys and local e-riders around here. I'm a friend of the owner of Weeze. Though I have to say from what I've seen you must have been really unlucky since it's the first time I've heard of the issues and I personally know a few people who run them. The product needs a bit refinement but still I was surprised.

Though I doubt you will convince them to do negative reviews on the bigger brands that pay for the ads on the main page.

True...I like the direction that PB Is going in...with the exceptions I mentioned. The photography on that site is wonderful, and I don't have to deal with the forced commentary via a slideshow like others. Sometimes I just wanna see a great photo. I really like the quickie reviews too...sometimes all you need is a paragraph.

I agree, the quick reviews are good. There is a ton of products that don't deserve a full on review. A stem for example...
Word. Anything with a performance that can be summed up in - it's light and it doesn't break shouldn't get a full review.

I read this in the pb-comments but how is it possible that a guy from germany steals a bike in the us and returns it to europe?

He bought it from my friend in Alabama. His parents paid to ship it to the guy in Germany, and then the German never paid. There wasn't much they could do about it from the USA.

Well no offense but that was fairly stupid. Would never send a bike like this overseas without recieving any payment.

The guy seems to specialise in scamming people outside of germany. Seems to be a pic of him:

We have a thread for stolen bikes over at mtb-news and in a few cases things were working out for a few people but even though both guys were german it was very complicated because the bike had already been sold, police confiscated the bike for almost a year etc. so I think from the us there's not much you can do.

It's probably in the hands of other people now:

And here is how the bike looked shortly after Franz Samm got it in the mail.

Note the yellow grips with purple lock-ons back on the original bars. The placement of the odi sticker on the downtube. The titanium coil.

The same 200x3.0 Obtanium spring. My friend that had this bike is very light.

Perhaps too light, because Franz Samm decided to 'downgrade' to a steel spring in a later photo of the bike.

He didn't sell the Industry 9 wheels with the bike, so here it is back on the original wheels with the 3C Minion DHF's. The fork has different stickers.

Photo of him swapping out the original stickers for the newer model stickers.

Oh, I agree. I would never send a bike like that, but you live and learn. He probably didn't expect it would happen like that.

I'm moving to Germany later this week, so if on the odd chance I can reclaim the bike, I'll have a downhill bike to ride over there.

Why not call the local police and file a police report? The german police all speak English pretty well.
Have you ever filed a police report? My experience with this is that it goes into a filing cabinet at the local police department, never to be looked at again.

I don't know what all they did to try to get the bike back or collect the money. I found out about it nearly a semester after it happened when I got back from school.

My experience with police reports is that the police will not do much investigating, but if you present a solved case on a silver platter they will usually get involved. A friend of mine had his credit card stolen. He tracked down the thieves using video from local businesses, got copies, and tracked them down in the neighborhood. When he gave the police names and an address and video of them using the cards, the police took over.

Its really not my issue, but if someone stole a few thousand bucks from me, that would certainly be an issue I would investigate.

Always get payment before you ship a bike, otherwise no deal. Always pay for a used bike via PayPal as you can file a dispute and get your money back should you not receive the merchandise. I did send the thief a rather nasty message on pinkbike for you/your friend. What a ****kng ass hole

The difference is age and maturity of the users. Pinkbike has a lot of younger kids trying to one up another with raging hormones. I use pinkbike for videos and photos, which it is great for. Its more media centered than a forum based site like this one. Both have their places, pinkbike isnt all that bad its just the tard to intelligence ratio is a little out of balance with its users.
