I use QGIS. But most layers were given to me by the county office in form of shape files. I added trails and google sat background.

I'm nowhere near proficient with QGIS. I get by enough to do what I need to do.

Have you located that icon for shapefile import?

Ok, in your Explorer (? as you can see my version is in French), locate XYZ Tiles (blue arrow) Right click and select "new connection"

In the pop-up window, put the name you want and paste this in the URL field:

https://www.google.com/maps/vt/lyrs=s@189&gl=cn&x={x}&y={y}&z={z}

after that you drag it in your "layers" tab.

There are many more you can add, OSM, Google Terrain, Bing, etc. just google it and you will find them.
