I noticed that my pads in my front caliper rock back and forth. I makes my bike feel like the headset is loose but it's not. I have made sure to tighten everything else and narrowed it down to the front brake. I have a '03 Mini with a 185 rotor if that makes any difference.

The brake is still working fine but it's quite irritating. Is this common and is there a fix?....D

My Mini's do the same thing, even with new pads. I've checked it all out and think it's fine, and I don't notice it at all when riding, but you're right, it's a little annoying.

well it's not acceptable...I don't like the way it tranfers vibratiuon to my fork and bars. I think if Hope expects you to pay a high price, high quality should follow. Don't get me wrong I really like the brakes, even more so than Hayes but this problem is enough to make me sell them and go back to Hayes...D

My Hopes do it. My Magura's do it. If the pads where a tight fit and didn't have any shifting room, how would they move when you squeezed the lever? What about when things expand from heat? I'd think a tight tollerance on brake pads would be a bad thing.
Then why don't Hayes do it? Why don't Avids do it? Its not a tight fit but how the pad is retained. There are solutions to the problem and some manufacturers have found them obviously.

Yeah, all pads wiggle a tiny bit, but you don't feel it. In BMXman's case, you can feel it quite a bit. There's a definite problem. I don't know what it is, and my days of fiddling with Hopes are over, so I'll defer the answer to his problems back to the mob...

Okay, I'm here everyone can relax now;) Try rebleeding the front, sometimes if there is a bad bleed it will not allow the pistons to fully extend allowing some play.

I would think the only way you could notice this riding is if you are locking the brakes up. My front hayes do the same and my rear floater does as well but if you check it without locking them up you can't feel it.

the problem here, is that he does not like the way the pads are attached to the calipers via the little pins. which allow the pad to rock back and forth between the pistons. rather than being attached to the piston itself, via a clip and a pin on the piston like the hayes, which do not allow for movement between the pad and piston............

No, that's not the problem. There is an excessive amount of play in the brake, and it's coming from the pads...I've seen his brakes, and I know Hopes. Heck, just the fact that his back brake isn't doing it should tell you that. It does indeed feel like a loose headset, until you examine it and isolate the movement to the brake...and the caliper is bolted solid...it's just the pads moving back and forth.

I'll leave the fixing of the problem to those who still enjoy messing around with Hopes. I sure don't...

hmm....for me it's been the opposite when I lock them up there is no chatter but as I'm feathering the brake that's when it's really noticeable....D

What I've learned about Hopes from RM:

Every Hope problem ever = bleed the brake.

If that doesn't work, bleed it again.

If it still doesn't work, you're an idiot and obviously can't bleed the best bleed system ever. It's not the brake, it's you.

Hm, I'm kind of confused as to what you guys are talkin aboot. But you say you get that vibration that goes throughout your front end right? I get that too, if I start comin close to lockin up the front, the entire fork and bars start vibrating. It's a really annoying feeling. I think my problem is a bent rotor though.

Who did you speak to at Hope? One of the guys I spoke to was really helpful when I've called in the past. If you want his name, PM me and I will give it to ya.
