I Have acid reflux extremely bad, I'm 25 and have had it bad for about 5 years now and been on meds the whole time. (currently aciphex)

I've been sick alot with my stomach the passed 3 months (abnormally), I'm gettin ready to head to the doc basically right after I type this. I have a blood panel set up for next week and full physical (been a long time sine the last one). I'm going in today because this morning I woke up very ill and am/was vomiting blood.

I did some reading up on WebMD but to put it bluntly I'm scared. I just want to hear about some of the stuff you other monkies have had to deal with as far as your stomachs go or related illness. I'm just in fear I'll get in there and they are gonna look at me and tell me surgery or something crazy.

don't stress too much til you get your diagnosis, that'll just make it even worse. I had a similar situation, and freaked out, got to the doc and they told me it was irritable bowel sydrome. I changed my diet a little bit and some other things and now things are a lot better.

Press your doctor for dietary ways to address the problem. If he/she isn't very forthcoming with options, I'd ask for a referral to a specialist - preferably one who deals in nutrition & upper GI problems. It may be that medication is the best option, but give your body a chance to work it out without the chemicals.

GO! SEAHAWKS!
I have/had a hiatal hernia and acid reflux for about 5 years (33yrs now)

I had surgery for the hernia 4 yrs ago, and all is good:) but still I get heartburn EXTREMLY bad from some foods. I'm not on any medication for it, I just really watch what I eat to keep it under control.

You should go to the doctor. The chances of it being something minor are way better than the pain you are currently in:)

If you don't get some dietary recs, like SS said, and don't have a resource to medical journals, I'll see if Julie will do some research for you. It likely would take a few days, since it'll be in her spare time, but I can get her your email and she can send some info to you. I am pretty sure she has done some work on this in the past. If you have a resource, just start reading about dietary concerns. That is likely your best long term relief. I can't imagine having those issues. The 2 or 3 times I have had heart burn, it sucked.

I'm 26, and came down with my bad case of acid reflux back in 99 or 00 (I can't remember). I was put on an crapload of medication that let me survive on a daily basis, but my diet was severely limited (read: grains, water, etc). After about a year of mildly effective medication and countless tests (if it's out there, chances are I had it), my doctor, parents, and I decided on surgery as the best course of action.

The surgery is called nissen laproscopic fundoplication. I have had an incredible recovery from the surgery. As my surgeon kindly put it, I will continue to feel the effects of acid reflux for the rest of my life, but only with regards to certain foods and situations (no fried foods, limited coffee, high stress, etc). I have heard of a few stories of some people having no relief from the surgery, having poor reactions to the surgery, and so forth, but I have had nothing but good experiences post op.

That being said, my life right now: I, for the most part, can do whatever I want, whenever I want. My stomach does have its bad times throughout the year. it'll hit maybe two or three times a year, for a week or three, during which I have to sleep very well, eat very mild and "easy" foods, and generally pay attention to whatever heartburn and nausea I experience. I don't eat fried foods, drink limited amounts of coffee, lay off very spicy foods, elevate the head of my bed, and still carry an antacid with me wherever I go.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this entire ordeal. good luck.

well, they called me back and I have an appt. at 2..... instead of going to sit for hours waiting.

When I was told I had Acid Reflux the doc told me at the same time I also had IBS.

I wrote down a list of notes, (thanks to S.S.) I'm going to request a nutrional specialists..... although my diet isn't that bad because I can't tolerate anything like "Reflux" said, the problem with my diet is my eating schedule. Two of the other things mentioned above that I know are helping cause the problems are my lack of sleep and stress level, probably a large part.

thanks pepe, I'm going to look into it (dietary recs) I'll def. keep that in mind and appreciate the offer.

reflux, thanks for sharing, I'm at the point where I would strongly consider it if doc recommended.

i have been to the emergency room before because my heartburn/reflux was so bad. i couldny breath or stand upright for. the last time i went i found out that they want to remove my gall bladder. your gall bladder can be the issue because it only functions after the intake of fatty foods. it releases a big dose of extra strength bile to help digest the fatty foods. i dont have health insurance so i buy over the counter prilosec and take two a day until i can get the whole gall bladder issue taken care of.

for the record nexium is the trade name of one of the proton pump inhibitors. they're not for all cases of acid reflux, but if PPIs are called for any of them should work equally well

My brother had a horrible stomach issue 2 years ago...
it lasted for about a 9-12 months...
He really couldn't hold any substantial food down...everything passed through very quickly...

He ended up going in for a colonoscopy (only 24yrs old), and it turns out he had about 20 polyps in his colon...
After they were removed, his diet was much better and could hold down food...

just a thought...

"Crohn's disease" and "pancreatitis" for those who want to google it with the correct spelling. regular ulcers are way more common than these zebras tho, with the exception of pancreatitis if you drink 17 beers a day i guess
