Right, but I'm saying those things of lesser importance (data, productivity) should take a back seat to what is considered less important now - like social programs, family time, personal time, etc. Instead, over time we have forced what is not important right to the top of the list and has become and obsession in this society. 5/7 days -40 hrs. per week is sickening. I'd be far more satisfied with a 30 hr work week.
I think I have to disagree with you on this point. I do think it would be nice to work less. But our inherent American laziness would totally ruin your argument. If somehow we got America to switch to 30 hour work days, we'd be happy for about a month (if that), and somebody would start another argument that we're working to much. And if that keeps up, the bike shop will always be closed when I need to pick up a part.

in no way am I going to say I love my job, but i dont mind it. I get paid very well to do something that is fairly easy for me to do. I like most of my co-workers, and we laugh allday long. It is a very relaxed atmosphere. if I had to gripe about something it would be the long hours that happen sometimes. My shift is 5 am - 12:30 pm ... most days i work until 3 ish .. so I still have time to get home and do something if I choose. and of course those extra hours are paid OT

Nope. I think we narrowed it down to Escalade driving pigs. They need to be killed not society. Once again society gets of the hook. Those bastards.....

Welp to celebrate American lazieness, I've just decided to do absolutely nothing all week. Like last week and the week before that. Who gives a shat about competitiveness with other countries. Japan already beat us with the automobile, why not let them have everything else, I don't care. I'm ready. HIT THE RESET BUTTON FOLKS. I've already done this, many many times. My soul is ready to kick my body to the curb.

I got a computer engineering degree. Used to it to work in cubicle hell. Woke up EVERYDAY with a cuss on my lips because I had to go to work. Counted down the minutes till 5. In general hated life. Then decided to FUKITALL and became a fireman. Now I get to ride in a big red truck. Hang out with some of my buddies all day at "work". Get paid to have a blast fighting fire and in general breaking things...which I have an uncanny knack for. And in general know that the work I do improves society. oh yeah and i only work 10 days a month....kick....a$$

Wait, first we work too much and now we're lazy? Your generalizations are getting out of hand. To reiterate:

Out of my mind, back in a moment.
Ok, here's the bottom line:

If you don't like the kind of society we have in America, you're welcome to leave for greener pastures. There are plenty of people who have more than fulfilling lives with their families, friends and spouses while working 40 hours a week.

If doing something is important enough, you'll get it done. It's that simple.

We were told that we (our dept.) WILL be dressing up for Halloween. What am I...12? This is a Technical Service office If I had the shorts and the jersey I'd show up in full DH gear just to see if anyone could figure I what in the hell I was dressed as....

Yeah yeah I know.... :nopity:

duh duh, yeah it's almost as bad as the "let's talk about the game at work"

Hey did you see that fat bastid catch that pass?

This is how I know I'm not fit for this planet.

But the dud that said in a couple replies back got it. I just haven't made it important enough to get out of corporate America.

You get what you think, and I've been concentrating on how much I hate too much.

OH and btw, I HATE MY JOB. I HOPE EVERYONE THAT WORKS HERE DIES IN A FIREY AUTO ACCIDENT ON THE WAY TO WORK AND GET'S PICKED TO PIECES BY TURKEY VULTURES SO THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO HAVE A FUNERAL WITH.

I am self-employed. My clients always "need" me to be onsite 5 days per week. If we all just eased up and took a 3rd day off per week, I wouldn't have to spend 71% of the week not doing what I'd rather do. I know, I know folks, some of you find that so difficult to comprehend - taking 3 days off per week?!   That would be a crime, right?

Young people, here's what you do.

Thank me later.

When you get out of school. Live with your rents if you can. Pay off your loans. Work for 10 years, saving 3/4 of your income. Put down a deposit for a house and put a deposit of 3/4 of the asking price.
Pay for everything in CASH

I only work so that I can live a comfortable life otherwise. I really have no love for working but I will put in my 8-5 with no complaints, and try to do a good job at it. I don't care about promotions and raises. I do my job and try to keep a low profile.

I do draw the line at overtime and and crap like being on-call, but at the same time I try to be a team player. (to a certain extent) So if the occasion arises that someone is needed to work a couple of extra hours or something, I have no problem with that. But I won't be one of those saps that routinely puts in 10-12 hour days.

In most of my jobs, I have never really had to try hard to do a good job. I have found that I can waste quite a bit of time and still be far more productive than most of my coworkers.

When I am really busy, I do like my job, when it is slow, it blows goats. I work a 32 hour week which means I am able to watch our 2 year old on Fridays. It is nice to have a little family perspective, not let the job totally rule your life. It is a nice balance. I wished we spent our early years in "retirement" so we could ride and do cool s*** and then when we hit 50 or 60, we work for 20 or so years till we decide it is time to push daisies. :)

I HATE work with a passion. Luckily my job is something that I wouldn't even consider work, in the sense you described, even on the busiest day. I love what I do.

It sounds to me like you may have made some bad decisions at some point. What is so important to you that, you have given up your life for? A home in the burbs? an SUV? a the latest & greatest DH rig with the current suspension technology? A penthouse loft Downtown eating & drinking at the finest restaurants? crack? a gambling/hooker/alcohol problem?

My point being, you didn't HAVE to become a slave.
Live beneath your means.

...& quit listening to Ramtha or whoever.

I'm surprised to hear you say you are stuck anywhere. Maybe your other diatribes are utter crap regurgitated from self-help books without you really paying attention to the substance, but you seem to know more than most people that you have the power to create a better situation for yourself. I'm talking about changing your reality, the reality we all share, not just your perception and attitude. Regardless, if you keep looking you will find a lot to hate in this world, so stop pounding your head against the wall and make a better life for yourself if you need to. The kind of change you are talking about is not gonna happen in your lifetime.

I have a job that I enjoy(?) a 70/30 love hate split with. Who wouldnt love a job with alot of outside time, guns and explosives? However, I have a workaholic, self worshipping boss, who thinks if you dont spend as much time freaking out as he does, you suck and arent worthy. With 2 1/2 kids (One on the way) a wife and dog, not to mention a bunch of bikes fighting for my attention, I always have something to do outside the parameters of work. I grew up beleiving that is there is no work at the office, there is always work at the house. I also used to think that work helped you appreciate your hobby time. Not when it leaves you so pissed and frustrated that you cant see straight, or find time for hobbies.
Honestly, if I didnt have to work, I wouldn't. Pedal all summer, ski the winters. Play a little beer league hockey and watch the kids grow...

Knuckle, it sounds like you'd enjoy a more socialist country than America - one where people are focussed more on quality of life than their bottom line.

May I suggest Italy, France (especially the south), Spain or New Zealand as possible reality changes for you? France has a defacto 35 hr week, and Siestas are still a serious part of life in lot of towns and villages in the Mediterannian area. Europ in general also gets a lot more holiday time than the US or Japan. Most people get a month off per year. In France it can be more like 6 weeks.

I like my job. 37.5 Hrs a week, good wage, tasks that I enjoy with a good balance between challengng and easily accomplished. I'm at home by 5pm most every day.

However I agree in principal that it sucks that we need to 'work' at all. Where is my utopian society where the pursuit of knowledge is the driving force, and robots do my dishes?

In my utopian society (IMUS) robots are built to last. I don't need the 'latest model'. The one built 300 years ago for my in-laws already has enough AI to get the dishes and housework done and works just fine. I'm not very materialistic. Actually ordering new objects from the assembally lines just to have a 'new one' is kind of looked down on. Not cool.

Alright everybody. I've been lurking on this thread for a while, but I have to come out with something.

YOU DONT HAVE TO BE A CORPORATE WHORE!!

you can organize a group of people and start a business just like your immigrant grandparents. you might not make as much money, but you probably won't hate your life as much either. it seems like a pretty clear "put up or shut up" situation to me. there's nobody stopping you. in this strange little system we have, either you work for somebody else or they work for you. pick one, do it, and stop complaining about your choice.

man, people on the Monkey must work for companies whcih throw crappy xmas parties...the ones our company used to throw (before they got too expensive) were great! the first couple of years they were at the Aquarium, then they went to the Museum of Fine Arts, then the Museum of Science. open bar, great food, IMAX theater, the works. plus all the young hotties would slide into little tight black dresses.

Well, I'm not so hot on the cooking. Mainly because I am lazy. I tend to have an odd enjoyment in organization, so cleaning is fun to me. And sex...what isn't awesome with that. At least a blowjob if not in the mood. Takes 10 minutes tops. Sorry about your luck.
