I have to deal with internal customers at where I work occasionally. Sometimes they get upset when you can't do what they want when they want it done. So this person who has worked here for years and that I assumed was a man starts getting huffy with my co-worker. I decided to step in when I saw he wasn't getting anywhere with it. I usually find when you start calling them "sir" or "mam" (sp?) that usually disarms them and you can atleast talk to them. Well when I called her "sir" she like froze in her tracks. She (it) started questioning me as to why I called her "sir". I stated that it just slipped out. She then just walked out of the room. I am waiting by my desk for the call up stairs. I swear to god that I thought she was a man. I mean WTF she has sideburnes like Elvis and a freekin' mustache. Seemingly wears mens clothing including suits. Mens glasses and shoes too! A lot of folks down here thought the same thing. This should be interesting......jdcamb

Tough luck with that one...if it makes you feel any better, I once remarked on a lady's impending baby, but it turned out she wasn't pregnant! (it was in the checkout line, and I couldn't flee...)

You could be proactive and go to whomever would be calling you about this....let them know before it gets to far. That way when she goes in they have an idea of how funny it really is.

HR?

When I was in the military, it was 'technically' legally to call the female officers 'Sir', so we did.

Unless the were like 250% butch, then we'd call them 'M'aam'.

:D

Thats what everyone is telling me to do. But I can't. I really did think she was a man. I feel bad. I am just going to tell the truth and apologize.

Going to the boss never helps around here because he always takes the side that makes him look good. He is just enough of a weasel to take advantage of this in the way that helps him at my expense.....jdcamb

Ha! My wife IS pregnant - 5 months, and is just starting to obviously show. So people keep on asking her tentatively - "Oh, are you expecting?" or "Boy or girl?". To which she reesponds by looking pissed and asking "What makes you think that I'm pregnant?!?!" The mortified looks that follow are priceless.

It's this sense of humor that made me want to marry her. ;)

Oh, and she usually tells them that she's screwing with them. Usually.

The truth is usually the best policy. It's good to see that you're remorseful ("I feel bad.") Try to get by it as best you can... and look that woman in the eye if you ever see her again... don't pretend you don't see her. For all you know, you may have a met a new friend. Don't let it become a huge deal.

there is a lady who is a field worker for the street sign division of my department, and she looks like a man...her name is BOBBIE...anyway...one day some man came in hollerin about some guy in a city truck cut him off and he wants to speak to his boss and he wants him repremanded and he's a terrible driver, etc. Then later on I overheard Bobbie's boss talking to her about the incident...the man thought Bobbie was a man! It was kinda funny...

It actually happens to me a lot because I dress kinda androgynous (sp?) (because that happens to be the look that suits me best), my boobs aren't huge, and I have tattoos. I can be in a public restroom wearing full make-up (i.e. black mascara), nail polish, and a tight t-shirt... and some woman will come in and start screaming, "There's a man in the women's room!" I feel so small after it happens. I am not completely surprised by it though--it happens to tomboys, y' know?

However, that woman dressing completely like a man i.e. in a man's suit, wearing sideburns and then getting pissed at being called, "sir," I don't get. If a woman, esp. a lesbian/bi, adopts a very butch appearance, she might attract some totally hot chicks, but she also equally runs the risk of being called "sir." It comes with the territory. I know. I've been there.

I finally talked to my boss. He asked me what happened and I told him. Before this he asked all the others present what happened (they just let me stew away and get all worked up, fackers:angry:). I asked him if I was in trouble and he said no. She didn't report me or anything from what he said. He had just heard about it from "someone" and wanted to know what happened. I asked him if I should apologize to her and he said to just let it go. I am relieved he was so cool about it. I will probably feel awkward towards her. I will take your advice and not act like she is not there. I agree that would be wrong. I so thought I would be fired by this. I guess I was wrong. I still feel like a turd though. Dodged another bullet I guess....jdcamb

At my old job, this co-worker of mine (who I obviously didn't know) tried to insinuate I was in the wrong restroom one day. (Okay, I had long blonde hair at the time... WTF?!! I guess my sweater was too baggy.) When she realized her mistake, she tried to make excuses. I told her she was making it worse--that I was already insulted and we both stormed off in a huff. We completely ignored each other for about a year. Then one day I decided that we really had started off on the wrong foot. So I stuck up a conversation with her, and she turned out to be a real sweetheart. We never became close, but we were acquaintances, and although I never forgot the incident and the pain, I forgave her and we were able to be cordial.

So hopefully the same kinda thing can happen for you! And maybe that lady is a chick magnet... stick near her and you might learn something!;)
