Queenstown! I rode all over Welly and S Island on a FR trip there in Dec 2002 and Queenstown had the biggest bestest gravity scene and the best trails. Nelson was good too. Friendly locals esp if bribed with Montieth brew.

Car rentals are cheap, just fly in, rent some piece of crap car and off you go.
