Syracuse's police chief, Steven Thompson, was arrested last night in a suburb of the city and charged with driving while intoxicated. The arrest was the result of Thompson's hitting a person on a bicycle.
According to police reports, the accident occurred at around 8:00 p.m. Thompson, who was driving a car owned by the city, hit the bicyclist who was treated on the scene for a minor hand injury. The police chief was arraigned in the Town of Geddes court and then released.
Thompson has been a member of the Syracuse Police Department since 1972. He was named First Deputy Chief in 2001, and was given the top job in August 2004 when Dennis Duval retired from the position.
Several years ago, Thompson was involved in an accident while driving a city-owned vehicle, crashing into a concrete divider, causing almost $4,000 damage to the 2002 Crown Victoria.
