Last night I came within an inch of formatting my computer...or throwing it out into the snow in the front yard until my gf found a little program on the net that could erase it. If you have this 'about:blank' spyware on your computer, you'll know what I'm talking about. I tried the program and it worked! Anyways, I have it on my HD in case someone wants it.

Just a heads up.

Yeah I have it. The only thing I found that could claim to get rid of it wanted $40 to activate the software. I figured the same arses created the spyware so I refuse to give them my money. Please tell me what you found that got rid of it.

I don't know where she got it (my gf) but she was determined since she couldn't check her email...it redirects you when you try to access your hotmail or yahoo.com accounts. Plus it was giving me some sort of BS default page with popups everywhere. After looking around, she actually found a free program that claimed to take care of it...it was either that or format my computer. Anyways, I have the zip file that'll take care of it. After it's done doing it's thing, you reset your homepage before you open up explorer and voila! You're back in business.

The program is called CWShredder v1.59.1

I had it and got rid of it using hijack this, cwshredder, and adaware. Not sure what the order was. I may have used browser hijack blaster too.

CWShredder must have been updated. When I got it Shredder would get rid of it until I rebooted the computer.

Hey, how about all those porn links it puts in your favorites?? Yeah, my wife just loved those.

The best adware/spyware removal software I have used is Webroot SpySweeper. You can get the free version from download.com or purchase the retail version at any software store. It is worth the 30 bones. Don't believe me, download the free version and use your one free definitions update. Before you scan run what ever software you currently use, then run spysweeper and see how much the other missed. And like posted before, once you clean your system out use firefox and you will not have that problem anymore.

To recap: You only need to buy the 30 dollar version if your to stupid to run firefox.

You know, as much as it pains me to say this, the new Microsoft anti-spyware beta isn't bad at all.

And, something that doesn't get brought up enough: If you have spyware and get rid of it, make sure you're patches are up to date, or you're leaving yourself open again.

I agree. It's pretty decent. Free software, plus it runs in the background to catch spyware as it gets installed rather than only when you scan.

Yes, I realize other software has this feature but most of the ones I've used require you to buy it if you want that feature.

I have yet to have SpySweeper, or any other application for that matter, pick up something that AdAware has missed. The reverse is not true, though - I have had AdAware pick up files that SpySweeper missed.

I had it about a week ago, and it bugged the hell out of me. With about 4-5 different spyware programs I was able to get rid of the toolbar and get IE/MSn to work somewhat better. And then the next day I came home from school and it wasn't there, I think my stepbrother must have fixed it.

I used CWShredder on my home computer last night. It said it did not find anything but it seemed to fix the problem. I'm confused and delighted at the same time. Started using Firefox anyway.

Or you could use Firefox.
I downloaded and started using Firefox last night, so far so good. But since it is an open code browser wouldn't it be easier to write spyware and viruses for it? Or is it just being the smaller guy that makes it not worth peoples time to write spyware for it?

Adware and Spybot S&D if you are going the free route.

MS Antispyware beta is very good as mentioned.

Pestpatrol and Webroot make the best corporate client/server solutions

Ah man, I have some crazy spyware again...this time I've tried 4 difference programs and they won't detect it. I downloaded a free one and it found a bunch of crazy things happening on my harddrive...when I went to click on 'delete', it told me I had to pay...probably the clowns that put the bugs out there in the first place.

Stop going to those naughty websites!
Use OPERA. Get a firewall. Think about reformatting your HDD and reinstalling everything. That whole clean slate dealie.

I had it, but McAfee took care of it. Good anti-virus software makers really have you by the balls. Computers just can't work without it. The firewall protection works well.

I took my firewall off actually because I was told routers have one built in. I guess it's pretty weak.

Mine will not let anything it withou specific permision. It gives a never/just this once/always promt that is very easy to use. SInce I activated it, my computer has run much better. We used to only have virus protection activated, but a lot of stuff was still able to get through.
