I headed out to the Colorado Cog Rally in Steamboat springs on Saturday. Man that was a fun time, a little tough to spectate, but fun none the less. Check out some pix

Pastrana making a young fan the happiest kid in the world.

Looks like this guy had a flat... not to mention a rollover...

I don't think that is factory, they used a hammer to put a little shape back into the door and duct tape to put a new windshield in.

"My advise to people is to always drive with something stupid on your roof" -Driver

Fun! I would recommend going to a rally race if you have the opportunity

Nice pics mate.
Just saw on the news in the WRC, Markko Martin's co-driver Michael Park died in a crash during the rally of Britain.

That's really horrible, WRC crashes are horrific, I'm amazed that more don't die. I remember one crash of Markko's last year that almost killed him and he came back next race at full tilt.

BTW, really nice pics. Any idea of who won? I wonder if Pastrana has found a new career?

That is horrible! It is amazing how few people die in the crashes, it really is a testiment to how well the cars are built!

Nobody won...not yet. It is still going today. They will post results on www.coloradocogrally.com

you are a pornstar of photography.

To all interested, there's probably a rally cross in your area...it's like autocross on dirt, but no roll cages are required, and if you have a moto helmet, you're all set.

I think pastrami is fulltime rallying, but i may be wrong. I heard nicky grist is colin mcrae's codriver for the WRC britain, but it's not on until tonight at 11

ps, outside of group N and WRC spec cars, most rally racers are just ordinary road-goers. The major difference is the cage, which is incredible. I saw some specs on a WRC cage, and it's incredible, thick steel with reinforcements everywhere.

with your parent's consent i think you are. You may need to be 18, but if your parents are with you you can...it all depends on where you are. I was at one where the owner of the property let his son drive...who was 7.

He was faster than me.

In order to race Rally America racing, you need to get a Rally America License. There is a class and a fee required in order to do that. They will make you start with a certain power vehicle for a certain number of races (sorry I don't remember the details)

I think Pastrana is doing rally pretty much full time this year because of back problems. I am not positive on that but I have to tell you, that guy is great for any sport that he is in. Such a positive guy and is always willing to spend some time chatting with his friends no matter how old or young.. That kid in the picture got about 10 minutes of time chatting with Pastrana and walked away SO psyched! I love to see big name athletes that make thier young fans know why they have a hero!

Thanks man, this was a bit tougher since I was relegated to the Spectator viewing areas, but I still came out of it with some good stuff! I have discovered that the larger white lens also makes you seem more important than you are. :)

Actually I don't know, check this site www.awdpirates.net. I check that out for all the info on local races. They are good knowledgable guys over there.
Also http://www.coloradorallycross.org/ You are looking at Rallycross, not autocross. Autocross is in parking lots around cones and that is fun too, but it is not rally. In autocross, you just need a car that passes their inspection. Nothing special required besides a helmet

scca autocross is what i'm talking about. I think for any trail/club/pro rally you need a full-on race cage, which is up to $4000 worth of metal and welding

if you can't afford to break stuff on your car i'd stick with autocross (on pavement in parking lots/on runways as josh says). it's quite fun :thumb:

two bonus points to anyone who can tell me the significance of my chosen car number (1729) without googling it...

Are there different classes like there are with mountain bike racing as such? (i.e. beg, sport, exp, whatever) Also, would my ghettoass 84 S10 blazer be suffice for a beater rally car? :p

yes, there are many different classes. poke around www.scca.org under "rally" (rallycross) and "solo" (solo II is traditional autocross). however, you won't be able to autocross your S10 in any class, as trucks and SUVs are not allowed due to rollover concerns. you may or may not be ok in rallycross, but i'd doubt it for the same reasons.

Lol, i'd be too scared to do autocross in my car because of that even if they were allowed. :p

What about an 87 Mazda 626? Its sort of just sitting in my dad's driveway (runs but needs new CV joints or atleast get them repacked)

Well to be honest, you kinda have to be able to afford to break stuff in either sport. Rally cross is obviously hard on parts and is crash prone, but autocross is really rough on brakes, tires, transmitions etc and can definitely cause things to break.
Autocross is definitely fun, I have never had a car for it, but I have ridden allong in a couple races and it definitely pushes the limits of the car and driver.

yes, that's my wrx :) . and i don't think breaking things should be much of an issue as long as i stay away from slicks... but then again my car already has an upgraded transmission gearset, center diff, and clutch. here's a video of me on that run, and one of doing a "driveby" on my buddy with a stock wrx (who rolled on the gas when i did):

20 sec segment of my last run of the day
"driveby" as viewed from a stock wrx

and chicodude is the winner, yup. smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways iirc.

Well if you have the upgraded gearset and center diff, then yeah, you should be ok. WRX's are kinda known for that there tranny issue. But in general Autocross is definitely hard on parts... Rally, well you can't be too picky about your paint in Rally :)

I love rallying............WRC is the snizzle.......

I didn't know that about Michael Park, I taped the rally as it was past my bed time (I get up at 4:45am...ugh) so I'll watch it tonight, that totally sucks though.

are those spoon wheels?

autocross looks really fun. i have a buddy who does lots of those (as well as rally racing w/. his wife/ co-driver). i did a ride-along on a run @ boundary bay (do you race up here as well?) - super intense. i loved watching the random displays of hardware & driving skills - and the absolute lack of correlation between them. there was a guy in a ford lighting pickup doing pretty well (all things considered) that day.

I agree, it is great (especially at autocross) to see the guys with the fastest cars pulling some of the slowest times and some of the slower cars pulling fast times, just because of driver skill. I saw a Viper get smoked by a Mini and an M3 get smoked by a miata. It is the great equalizer.

great pics. i was there last weekend, too bad it didn't coincide.

Travis would help any sport he was in. he is my favorite all around athlete.

I should have guessed that you would be up there. I made it a last minute trip.
Got home from Europe Wednesday, worked thursday, drove up there Friday, came back Saturday and worked sunday...one of these days I am going to take a day off. But doing lots of stuff seems to be a good way to combat Jetlag

nope, rota slipstreams, which i'm selling in favor of STi BBS rims. the slipstreams are light (13.5 lbs!) but they're also only 7" wide.

i've actually only been to one autox :oink: , thus the "novice" category designation on my window. :thumb: i'm going to two more this season, both down near seattle, however. maybe i'll make it up north next season (if i don't get completely wiped every which way by the competition in my real/non-novice class)...

I have been to a few, but I have never driven. I just don't have the car for it. But it is fun to ride along. Actually it is even more fun to ride along with different drivers. You can see who is better and it is interesting to see the way they handle different sections of the course.

I rode along at Second Creek raceway one time as well. It was a test and tune day and I was in a Subaru. We got passed by an open wheeled car that was so low the wing was up to the top of the door on the car, it was about the only thing we could see as it passed, but we sure could hear it!
