WARNING: gimpy weight-saving thread!!!

OK so I already have a 450lb ti spring, but it's a 2.75" one, and my shock is only 2.5". Now since (apart from its prettiness) the only point in having a ti spring is to save weight it strikes me that I (in theory) have 10% more spring than I need. Current spring weighs 360g, so I should (again, in theory) be able to find a 2.5" one that is more like 330g?

Now I've been scouring ebay and various forums for a while, and had no luck so far. So does anyone know whether any company has made such a spring.

FWIW I need it to fit a DHX5 - my current one is an RCS and fits fine, though it rubs a tiny bit if not centred properly - doesn't bother me though. Free length is 150mm.

I also happen to have a 3" RCS spring to hand, here's how that compares:

3" x 450 (168mm free length) = 417g
2.75" x 450 (150mm free length) = 360g

That trend suggests that I could see a 2.5" spring coming in at around 300g. Though TBH I think what the figures actually mean is that the 3" spring is a 3.25" spring and I am mistaken :)

I can, and in fact I think that'd be better, but I'm in the UK unfortunately :(

The coil windings on the manitou springs on ebay are spaced far enough apart to run a 2.25.

I just bought a 450x2.25 for my 2.5" dhx.

Cheers Slater, I've noticed before when measuring springs that they appear to have space for more travel than they let on. I've assumed that they will go past their elastic limit if you try to compress them full though?

Yeah, I'll be measuring the free length of mine from time to time after I've had it to check and see if it is plastically deforming.

Sounds like lot of trouble to save a few grams, I'll wait till I find one in the UK.
