His campaign sent out an odd letter last month in the district just south of mine:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/19/AR2006101901721.html

I just found this out today, and thought it was funny:

From the Wapo article:

His campaign materials describe immigration as the focus of his campaign. He praises the Minuteman Project and opposes Bush's proposed guest-worker program.

Nguyen himself immigrated to the United States at age 8, one of thousands of Vietnamese to flee in boats. He worked as a stockbroker before entering politics.

Then there is this from his own website:

TAN NGUYEN WAS BORN IN DANANG, VIETNAM IN 1973. When Tan was eight, his family fled their homeland, escaping the communist regime, on a small boat. Tan's father had been imprisoned after a first failed attempt, but was determined to free his family from the oppressive government. Tan still has vivid recollections of that long, dangerous journey, a pivotal influence in Tan's development and drive.

I wonder if Mr. Nguyen had a valid visa when he first set foot in this land o' liberty?

Tan Nguyen is a tool. I haven't received any of his mailings, but his campaign exploits have been widely documented on the OC Register's website. My favorite mailing of his was the one detailing how the return of his campaign computers cleared him and his staff of any wrongdoing. Apparently Tan didn't consider the fact that once the hard drives were copied by the state, they had no add'l need for the computers themselves.

I remember reading a story of how some area in The OC went to lengths to remove a grip of campaign signs from their streets. Tan had more signs removed than any other candidate, and it wasn't because he had more on the streets.

What, just because he's from Vietnam? His dad was tortured? He should have stayed at home and worked to make things better in his own country rather than come here and run away from his problems.
I can only assume it was refugee status. I have a Vietnamese foster brother (named Thai Nguyen) who came to live with us in 1980. He was a refugee. After 5 years he became a canadian citizen. His dad was in prison at LEAST 7 years...as he was a cop on the wrong side of the government.

I am of course just giving the appropriate amount of sympathy that immigrants get in Orange County by the average whitey. YMMV.

I just find it odd that someone from a wave of fairly recent immigrants (which is what the Vietnamese are...and I love that, I can get the best Vietnamese food outside of Saigon 5 minutes from my house.) has no problem crapping all over a group of more recent arrivals. Human nature, I guess. Just like the second least popular kid in school still has the real loser to kick around to make himself feel good. Or, perhaps, the way the rest of us have Ted Haggard.

in my understanding, usually you get it after you set foot in the host country. kinda like cubans.

getting refugee status at the local US embassy, before you travel, is unusual. and given he recalls a "long dangerous journey on boat", it seems more pausible.

MY ancestors were poisoned, starved, cheated and murdered by YOUR ancestors...and now we have casinos. Even trade? Give us your damn money!
Actually my ancestors came over here to avoid European fashions of the 1960s. I'll give you money but only in trade for beer.

We slaughtered your woman and children you gave us tobacco, genius.
