Apple inspired?

Crank Bro's.

I didn't read the farticle but they often state that apple is a major influence on their designs.

Our brand is very influenced by not only Apple Computer or the obvious car influences that we all see, but also what's gone on in home appliances like Sub Zero refrigerators, and beautiful wine cabinets that have these stainless finishes that can be polished out and really look wonderful.
They used the same stamping/bonding process that Apple uses for the G4 titanium powerbooks.

function following form, that's how all good products are made

Something bothers me about writing a patent before you have any idea if it will even work. CB have a good track record, hope these cranks they have trouble making (have they been tested yet?) work out for them.
