Rio and apple aren't the only flash player vendors on the market. Probably one of the best ones out there right now comes from Jetaudio...
I'm not married to the shuffle, but I've done a little research and I haven't seen any other super compact player, including the JetAudio, that offers 1G for $150. I'm all ears though.

I didn't read every post so don't yell at me if i say something repeated or stupid. (well stupid you can.)

The shuffle you can arrange a playlist in itunes or you can select which songs go on that will get shuffled. In my opinion it looks pretty cool, the price is good, and it'd be nice for riding/running and not worrying about my 15gig ipod getting smashed. I think no matter how bad everyone hates it will sell like no other. The iPod mini got criticized so bad everyone thought it was a rip off. Oh but wait it sold like no other and they made a ****load of money on it.

And also the ipod battery problems, don't use the backlight and turn off that clicker noise. And also, it's not to hard to plug your ipod into your computer or the wall for a few hours a day. I don't think i've ever had to sit down and make sure it was charging. It gets charged between my car, my jbl onstage, and my computer and the battery has never run out for me.

And thats all.

Well, of course it'll sell simply because it's got the Apple (and iPod) name associated with it. But that doesn't mean it's any good :D

Ahh, so don't use some of the devices features and make sure you're near a charger every few hours, and that'll solve the problem of a crappy battery... Okay, makes sense. Remind me again why they can't just design the device to get a good battery life, rather than inconveniencing the consumer?

I was just stating on how you can get longer battery life. I use my backlight and the battery lasts long. I have the 3G one and i still pull 8hrs of battery life consecutive out of it. It's just known in the older models those features took up battery life and you would turn them off and gain a good amount of battery life.

And I rarely charge mine i use it in my car when i drive and when im at school thats rarely. I plug it into my computer like once a week, and i use my JBL stand at home but not at school. I'm sure apple will eventually get a good battery life out of the ipods but you can still get decent battery life out of it. It's not like you are going to listen to 13hrs of music straight, just plug it in at night or something.

Good mini-article poking holes in Steve Jobs FUD from DAP Review:

Last Week, at the MacWorld Expo, Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) announced the new iPod Shuffle, declaring it superior to Rio Forge in his keynote address. If you're not aware, the Forge is another flash-memory based player, one of the most popular. Jobs made a point that the Forge has "a small screen, tortured user interface, and no click wheel" (see pics HERE). It struck us an odd comparison, since the Shuffle has almost no features to speak of. His pitch is that the Shuffle is cheaper, and easier to use.

We disagree. Let's examine what these two players have to offer, both, for under $ 100.

Rio Forge
• MP3, WMA, Audible support
• FM Radio
• Up to 20 hours of battery life
• Built-in LCD Screen (marvelous new invention)
• Built-in SD card slot
• Stopwatch & Lap Timer
• Browse by Artist, Album, Title, Genre
• Self-database feature, no software required, NONE
• Includes Sports Case with Armband
• Uses standard AAA battery, easily pop in a new one

Apple iPod Shuffle 512mb ($ 99 everywhere)
• MP3, AAC, Audible support
• Up to 12 hours playback
• Includes Lanyard
• NO screen
• NO expansion slot
• NO radio
• Built-in battery, must recharge over USB (4 hours)
Sale Price $ 56 AR
Sale Price $ 37

Now, the 128mb Rio Forge is on sale at Amazon.com for $ 56 (after rebate). And you can pick up a 512mb SD card along with it, for $ 37. That's $ 93 total, making it $ 6 cheaper than the 512mb Shuffle, and with the Forge you get 640mb worth of storage (total) and a ton of extra features.

So ask yourself, which is the better player? Which is the better deal?
Great user comment:
According to Jobs the Forge has a 'tortured user interface.' Their solution? Remove the interface, leaving just the tortured user.

Hmm, so thats what PMPs are for:

Pragmatic MP3 Manufacturer Hires Porn Starlet

MP3 manufacturer Reigncom, recently described as an “outstanding firm” by Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, is making waves by using an adult film star in advertising for its new products.

Reigncom late last year introduced its portable multimedia player (PMP) onto the U.S. market, hiring U.S. porn starlet Jenna Jameson to appear in advertisements.

Industry sources say it was a pragmatic move. "One cannot ignore people using the PMP to watch adult material,” said one. “I think they were targeting these customers when we hired a porn actress."

"Males are the primary target for most digital equipment,” said another. “We tried to find an entertainer easily recognized by men, and we selected Jenna Jameson. There was nothing else behind the decision." Company officials said.

Check this out - pay me $50 and I'll do the upgrade for any of the iPod owners out there wanting the latest technology:

I'm very interested, however I have a few questions:
1. If I want a different color than the yellow, is that possible?
2. Also, I have a 3rd Gen iPod, do you have a version that works on it?

Thanks!

On a side note, I do wish that the Shuffle had a FireWire jack, not USB, that'd be a bit faster...it does look cool for riding/excercising...

Go-ride is going to sell their own version call go-play covers that might meet your needs, PM one of them;)

I think a screen would be better that firewire versus USB. Besides the flash memory controller on there probably couldn't saturate either bus. On PC, which have much better USB implentation than the Mac, external USB 2.0 HDDs read at about the same speed as firewire model and write faster than the equal firewire model. There are more PC users than Mac, so USB 2.0 makes sense for selling them.

Yet again, evidence surfaces of Apple's source for its innovative ideas - the real innovators (from DAPreview.com):

Waaay back in 2003, someone introduced a wearable USB-drive that doubled as a flash-based MP3 player. You wore it around your neck. There was no screen. Controls were limited to a single big button, for Stop, Start, & Pause. You could pop off the cap on one end, plug into your computer, and use it like a data drive.

Sound familiar? Sure, but we're talking about the Philips KEY006.

• KEY006 Amazon Reviews
• KEY006 Product Homepage

It didn't get much attention with the flood of new players that year. Not exactly cutting-edge stuff. Regardless, some people bought into the idea of a wearable player, while others thought it was useless without a screen.
Haha, it took Apple a year this time to copy their competitors. It only took Apple 6 months to copy the mini HDD player of Rio/Creative/iRiver.

The CEO of the company should re-introduce this player at higher capacity and a lower pricing than the Shuffle. Hire some really good PR people and then he could compare the two:

"The ipod Shuffle has a tortured interface. 4 buttons = confusing... why not 1 button..., presenting the KEY007"

Think different, think again sucker

Duh, Austin
So the kings of usability and interface design release something WITHOUT A SCREEN?

This was OK when you could put 32MB or 64MB on an MP3 player back in the day. But with 1GB of storage capacity, it makes it highly more likely that someone is going to load up a bunch of songs and want to find one.

Also, what about copying over several albums? With 1GB you could probably put several albums worth of music (maybe 10-20 or so) wouldn't you want to hear one album straight through? It's a mess. I have a mini and love it, but this one is brain-dead.

I don't really see how it can be brain dead it is after all just a copy of existing successfull products. I have had a player with the same functions for ages.
The flash market could be a lot bigger than it is. Lots of people just don't understand what a flash player is. Apple could make a killing just selling to people that didn't know about flash players before seeing one of apples adverts.

you can take it off shuffle mode so it'll play straight through. you have a Mini? i'm sure you've said that numerous times, but i've never noticed. do you take it to work with you?
