They really need to add front facing stereo speakers like Samsung. If I was getting a second Tablet I would be tempted to get a Samsung.

I don't know why this is a surprise. There were virtually no consumer-friendly tablets on the market at the time the iPad was introduced.

I expect the iPad will take the same kind of product arc as the iPhone did, which continues to still have a very substantial market share and sell very well, despite it having dropped off from its dominant market share.
iphone is losing market share too. not sure if you saw the report bv, but in the 16-20 year old demographic, the iphone is beginning to become "uncool"

Yes, it's losing market share. It's a single product from a single company - I expect that, as competing products catch up, it will continue to fluctuate in its market share. I'm just saying that complete market dominance is not necessary in order for a product to be successful.

We're going to be getting a gift from the company to recognize our stellar safety record. I'm gunning for an iPad (i couldn't think of anything in the right price range that wasn't bike related...)

Turns out we're getting a prepaid credit card for $500 instead. Win.

for how much longer? apple's tablet market share is below 50% for the first time (down to 43.6% as of dec '12). Samsung tripled their tablet sales and now have 15% of the market. if the rumors are true and they do release a $150 tab, expect even more growth.

I never understand why an article like that would not include size of the market. Anyway great to see the competition really getting into gear.

to be honest, I have a galaxy note and it's fantastic. I don't even notice the size. If you're a fixie rider, you may have a problem with it in your ladie's jeans, but for normal people it's not that noticeable. I have a harder time with the wifes ipwn and it's microscopic font than i do with the jitterbug style note.

looking for classic NE singletrack
2.65% div yield and a P/E under 9??!?

It's sitting on $135 BILLION in cash, and could go as high as $170b by the end of the year... They're not cutting that juicy dividend anytime soon, and could even increase it.

F me, never thought of Apple as a "value" stock, but it's looking pretty attractive.

getting there. and with the new Nexus 7 just around the corner...

The latest numbers from Strategy Analytics show that Android tablet shipments absolutely crushed iPad shipments in the second quarter of 2013, as the 34.6 million Android tablets shipped on the quarter more than doubled the 14.6 million tablets that Apple sold. Again, however, Strategy Analytics is comparing Android vendors’ channel sales to Apple’s end-user sales.

got my order in for a chromecast dongle too
I would have bought the chromecast for the free 4 months of Netflix (I have no account so 3+1) but they dropped that promo almost immediately. I've got quite a DVR backlog and a HTPC so it doesn't really matter to me.

i got one to mess around with and see how it is. we want to get another tv for our family room. we've got a smart tv in one room, which is pretty slick. however, if we can get roughly comparable functionality out of the chromecast (right now the lack of amazon prime support is the only thing it doesn't have), we'd opt for a regular TV over another smart TV, since the cost difference is still more than the cost of the chrome dongle

The Chromecast is a little limited in functionality right now but it seems like the sky is the limit if they can pick up any kind of adoption, and at $35, the device is firmly in the "oh, what the heck" price range.

YouTube and Google Play movies/music integration is slick. Now they need to integrate broadcasting of local media and it immediately becomes the easiest/simplest way to put digital content up on your TV, since it's smaller and cheaper than an Apple TV, and doesn't require iTunes like Airplay does.

If you have an AppleTV and an mac you don't need iTunes unless you want to play content from the iTunes store. There are also third party solutions for Airplay for PCs. Of course there is also the industry standard of DLNA and now Miracast.

BV - i'm inclined to agree with you. i think they just wanted to whip something up, then throw it out there and gauge consumer response before starting to bake in more functionality.

You also have to give app developers a chance too like any new platform/feature.

It will all be in the TVs in time and these add on devices will be dead. You can already push content to TVs with DLNA. Google TV does the same thing that chromecast does for the most part (I've heard the sw is really based more on google tv than android).

Remember when you used to travel? You had an MP3 player, a camera, a GPS, a phone and a computer. Now it all fits in your pocket.

Everything will run through the smart TV because consumers have a hard time with boxes. They want one remote. The only thing stopping this is media companies and device companies all fighting over a proprietary interface because they want control.
