Jenn and I have been looking at a new 'fridge for the new house and settled on a side-by-side. The bottom mounts look nice, but the side-by-side allows ice & water in the door, and is a good compromise for accessability. There are still parts of the 'fridge & freezer that are on the bottom and hard to get at, but there are also parts of both that are easy to access on the top.

What I did see was a Samsung with a side-by-side on top, and two drawers on the bottom that could be individually temperature controlled and converted between refrigeration and freezing . Too bad it was $2700.

The nice thing about a bottom pullout freezer is you tend to get a little bit more upper fridge room. As far as Stainless goes, black or white fridges work just as well. You got to decide if you want SS appliances for kitchen, if so go for it.

Depends how much you get into the freezer, methinks. My sister has a bottom mount and IMO it's more difficult to find/get stuff out of it. So if you're dipping in the freezer frequently it might be less useful.

And another bit of advice - if you get water & ice in your fridge get an extended warranty. That water/ice in the fridge thing is a disaster waiting to happen. Also, the ice maker & water thing take up a ton of useful space in most fridges.

Of course we don't use much ice, so YMMV.

Why do you say that?

I've had ice makers in my refrigerations forever with no problems, and all the in-door unit adds is a mechanical pass-through for the ice. The water line is just part of the water line that would normally fill the ice maker.

the bottom freezer is something i'd never give up. the fridge gets 92% of the use, so why not make it ergonomically as easy as possible? plus, the extra capacity is nice. we went from a side/side configuration and i'd never go back. i keep a plastic container of water in the fridge, and if i want ice (which isn't that frequently), i can get some out of the freezer.

To be honest, that's the only thing I've *ever* seen go bad on a refridgerator. Compressors seem to run forever but ice/water eventually barfs and spews water all over. If you're really unlucky you've got hardwood floors under the fridge when it does. :mumble:

They're trouble, I tell ya...... trouble. Just waiting to happen.

YMMV as always.

We recently picked up one of the LG french door/bottom mount units and I've got to say that I've never been happier with an appliance purchase (if that isn't a sign of getting old, I don't know what is). Being able to swing open each door individually is pretty sweet. Also, with the freezer being on the bottom, it's wide enough to stash an entire pizza box with lots of room to spare.

We went without ice and water in the door. There's an icemaker in the freezer and we also keep a container for water in the fridge as mentioned here already.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
We have an LG with a bottom mount and french doors. I wouldn't trade that configuration for anything. It will hold big platters without a problem. The freezer was different at first but once we got used to it and how to load it, I find it easier than our old frig.

edit: badmunkey has the same taste. Excellent.

hey badmunkey...FYI

Product Recall -- LG Electronics
LG Three-Door
sold between May 2004 and May 2005
Dear Valued Customer:
Your satisfaction and safety are our top priority. In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission, LG Electronics is voluntarily retrofitting about 1,100 LG®
brand three door 21.0 to 25.0 cubic foot bottom freezer refrigerators. We have
determined that some of these models have a faulty component in the condenser fan
motor that can short circuit, causing the condenser fan motor to stop working. Under
certain conditions, this may pose a potential hazard to customers. To ensure your
satisfaction, we will retrofit affected models sold between May 2004 and May 2005 by
conducting an in-home service call to replace the condenser fan motor free of charge at
your convenience. The potentially affected models are as follows:
MODELS & Serial Number Range 405KRxxxxxxx – 410KRxxxxxxx
LRFC21755TT
LRFC21755SB
LRFC21755ST
LRFC25750WW
LRFC25750SW
LRFC25750SB
LRFC25750TT
LRFC25750ST
Our records indicate that you may own one of the affected LG® refrigerators. The units
were sold at major retailers nationwide between May 2004 and May 2005. The units
have three doors and are either titanium or stainless steel with graphite handles, or
bisque, white or black.
The refrigerators involved in this voluntary retrofit program have serial numbers ranging
from 405KRXXXXXXX through 410KRXXXXXXX. If your serial number is within the
ranges specified above, contact LG immediately for a free retrofit at the toll-free
number listed below. The serial number is located on the model number plate inside
the fresh food section of the refrigerator. (See photo below for location.) Please record
your serial number below so you can provide it to your LG representative when you call.

You can continue using your LG® refrigerator as usual while you wait for the
retrofit. This repair should take approximately 20 minutes. To arrange the free inhome
retrofit at your convenience, please call an LG representative at:
1-888-294-5782 (8 a.m. to 10 p.m. CST) Monday through Saturday
You may also visit http://us.lge.com to arrange for a free retrofit.
We sincerely appreciate your cooperation in this matter, and we apologize for any

The in-laws have a bottom freezer. I hate it. The only thing I ever need from it is ice. It is a pain in the ass for that.
so you'd rather have a fridge/freezer which makes it harder to access the non-ice items, (ie, 99% of the time)?

We had a side by side that was too narrow and I hated it. When we replaced it, we looked at the bottom freezer and I didn't like it. Maybe the location of the 'fridge is key since ours is in the corner. With the bottom freezer, it just didn't seem like it would be a good idea.

Guess I'm too old school or something

I never found getting something from the fridge to be PITA. Changing the oil in my car, now THAT'S a PITA. Of course I also don't just haphazardly throw stuff in my fridge, so when I want something I can get it. And a bottom freezer makes it harder to stand in front of the freezer enjoying the cold on a hot day.

Or maybe it's that you geezers are just having trouble bending over in your old age. :p :D

I'm with short shorts here.
I can't tell you how many times in my life, I have seen broken water/ice makers including my fridge growing up.
I remember putting cups up to the ice handle, and it would sound like someone was killing a walrus in my fridge for about a minute and one ice cube would fall out.:mumble:
My father just got a new fridge, and now the water stopped working.
He just called Sears and his short warranty runs out on June 30, so he got lucky this time.
We just got all our appliances and my wife insisted on the 5 year warranty for that very reason.
As far as color, we went with this "silver mist" color which is cool.
It looks just like stainless, but without the grubby fingerprints that will stay on it all the time.

Holy crap! That's probably why I don't get those bling refrigerators. I think our ~21 foot top freezer one was something like $550. :D

bottom pull freeze + ss finish = $, but i got a good corporate discount through work, otherwise it'd been north of 2K.

that amount included tax/delivery/extended warranty
base price was around $1500, which for the model i chose, i think
is a pretty good price.

ive been low balling it for a long time now so my new pad is gonna be decked out with some nice stuff.

next on the list is a stainless full sized kegarator, 8' pool table, home theatre/surround sound system

is ALWAYS key I say...
Pros and cons.

Side by side is more convenient but then again with the bottom style you could store a dead body till the perfect time to take it out late at night to roll it in a rug and throw it in the trunk of your Cadillac and bury the body in a shallow grave, DOWN BY THE RIVER!:D

now that you mention it a river is only 0.6 from my house. i always thought a sausage machine, and then bring 'it' into work would be the best way...not that i've ever given it any thought or anything

SS sucks for keeping clean. Looks cool as anything until all those fingermarks start showing up and never go away. SS and kids is a VERY bad combo. Same thing with white glass cooktops for stoves - look awesome when new, but get all gungy looking really quick no matter how much you clean them.

Nice fridge though.

i think that the bottom mount is more economic because the drawer doesnt lose as much cold air when you open it.. that was the big sales pitch when i was lookin at new refridgerators. thats a nice fridge!!
