Martin fletcher on msnbc just reported according to Israel security ARAFAT HAS DIED

More:

ISRAELI SECURITY SOURCES HAVE JUST INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAVE SOLID INDICATIONS THAT YASSER ARAFAT HAS PASSED AWAY. I WANT TO STRESS that these are as yet UNCONFIMRED security reports. Israeli media reports say military forces have been placed on full alert, ready to move into Palestinian areas at the first sign of trouble if indeed the Palestinian leader has passed away.

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz is meeting in emergency session with senior security officials in Tel Aviv to discuss the reported severe deterioration of Yasser Arafat’s health in the past few hours. The Palestinian leader was rushed to intensive care in a hospital in France overnight. Reports reaching Jerusalem, broadcast on Israel radio, say the Palestinian leader has slipped into a coma once again. A news conference by his doctor’s, scheduled for this morning, has been abruptly cancelled, leading to speculation that Arafat may be at death’s door. Palestinian officials, who have confirmed that their leader is gravely ill, are also now meeting in emergency session in Ramallah. According to press reports, Arafat stopped breathing for a time overnight, along with other signs of possible imminent death.

Israeli leaders are reportedly concerned that if Arafat passes away in the next 24 hours, there could be significant unrest in the Palestinian areas on the last Friday of Ramadan—always an emotional time for Middle East Muslims anyway. Police and army forces are expected to be significantly beefed up to deal with any possible backlash, especially around Jerusalem. The number of Arab Muslim allowed up on the Old City’s Temple Mount for Friday prayers is now expected to be severely limited.

Government officials are said to be especially concerned over unfounded rumors swirling around the territories that Israeli agents might have poisoned the veteran PLO leader. Arafat’s doctors earlier denied that any poison has been discovered in his body. There is also said to be widespread Palestinian anger over recent reports in the Israeli media that quote a homosexual web site which suggests that Arafat might be suffering from AIDS. The reports maintain he may contracted the disease during sexual encounters with some of his male bodyguards. Israeli security agents have long been said to possess concrete evidence of Arafat’s alleged illicit homosexual activities. Other rumors that have circulated in the region for several years claim that Arafat’s ten year old daughter is actually the result of an affair between his wife Suha and now-jailed Fatah official Marwan Bargouti. All of this is expected to add to tensions expected when the veteran Palestinian leader finally dies.

CNN said he was in a "coma". His death will really allow for a resuffeling of power in Israel.

It's not gonna be good over there. :dead:

Thought not likely this at least creates an opening for a valid leader for the Palestinians that could put them on the right track. Or it could implode into an internal power struggle that the Israelis will use to weaken the opposition. Either way I guess it really can't get any worse.

Yes, the Israelis said when they placed the pillow over his face to see if he was still breathing that all the uncertain kicking and gasping stopped pretty quickly and then didn't restart leading to a positive determination of his expiration.

French hospital denies reports of Arafat's death
Israeli media, Luxembourg PM say Palestinian is dead

BREAKING NEWS

NBC News and news services
Updated: 12:11 p.m. ET Nov. 4, 2004PARIS - A hospital official in France on Thursday denied reports that Yasser Arafat had died as the result of an undisclosed illness. The statement came after Israeli media and the prime minister of Luxembourg’ said the 75-year-old Palestinian leader had died.

As has been the case since he was hospitalized last Friday, reports about Arafat's condition differed sharply.

As multiple reports appeared that the veteran PLO leader, a French official emerged from the Percy Military Training Hospital to make a brief statement.

"Mr. Arafat is not dead," Christian Estripeau said, adding that the Palestinian was transferred to intensive care Wednesday afternoon and was "receiving appropiate treatment." He did not elaborate.

I almost cried when I clicked on the SA forum yesterday for a quick fix and found...worse than nothing. There just isn't enough trojan horse porn out there for workplace usage. I need my mid-day nookie fix to parade before our firewall and IT nazis as a harmless moutainbiking website!

Yeah - a sad day indeed. There is a thread in the lounge where we can complain about RM violating our first amendment rights.

Coma.

Israel must be well pleased. The stage is now set for Palestine to decend into factional violence, thus proving that Palestinians are savages, and that Israelis are right to kill them like the dogs they are.

Great.

Oh you didn't just say that? Gimme a break DT. You are as bad as the Israeli protestors at my University. He does, and he will be replaced by someone much more hardline. To make matters worse, Israel will move into palestine using the mourning gatherings as singns of impending violence and "unrest".

I am not saying plaestine is any better, both nation states are pretty ****ed up, but arafat is about as soft line as the palestinians get.

Well, my hope is that an election in Palestine w/o Arrafats influence will result in a more moderate govt there
While I can agree with you about that, it will not happen. Not a chance, the palestinians are now more pissed off then ever at Israel since the whole wall fiasco. They will go severe hardline.
