"It was a funny angle!"
can I mount cantilever brakes on the type of brake boss shown in the pic below? Not really worried about the fork because I am gonna swap in a rigid that will probably have canti brake bosses but more about the rear brakes..

thanks.

Yeah, I needed to get one when I upgraded my old hardtail to V brakes. I bet you can find them super cheap these days, I would check Cambria bikes first.

"canti bosses" are the same, whether for old or new style (v-brake) levers. Your new vees will mount up fine.

Those seatstays look pretty well braced from above. I don't think you'll need a brake booster. I suggest you look into a set fo Avid 7 brake levers and Avid 7 vee brakes, which are easily had for great deals on eBay or from SuperGo, Price Point, etc... Combine that with a nice set of Avid Flak Jacket cables and you will have made the best dollar-to-performance brake upgrade possible on that bike. Great brakes, great price!

I'm bettin' you'll want a brake booster, maybe you won't need it but you'll want it. Adding higher leverage brakes to an old design is asking for substandard performance. The boosters only cost like $10. It seems like Performance had them on closeout for less, if you look you may find one in violet anno to match the old school frame.
