To me eyelets are more of a benifit than welded walls and machined sidewalls.

If should be cheaper than a comparable rim with out eylets but may be heavier.

Eyelets will provide a better surface for the nipple to turn on making building and trueing easier and possibly allowing higher spoke tenson.

However rims with out eylets are not crap and it is possible to build decent strong wheels with them.

There are a few high-end rims out there without eyelets, but generally BEEF rims. The Arrow DHX and the Atomic Trailpimp/Aircorp rims come to mind. I've had no trouble building on a non-eyeletted rim (the Arrow), but I use a liberal amount of grease on the nipple seats on all my wheels so I never have any trouble.

All things being equal, I'd always take the eyeletted rim, but I wouldn't turn down a rim simply because it doesn't have 'em. You can get a good build, BUT DON'T USE ALLOY NIPPLES!!!!! Al on Al = MAJOR friction.
