Ok so I am looking at a 01 fisher sugar-3 (new) and want to use it for XC racing/training. but when I talked to my bike guru/know it all, he said the Bontrager Hubs are junk and I should find a bike with Shimano hubs. now this was his only complaint about the sugar ( aside from the genisis geomitry which I think rules). this bike has everything I want in a XC bike it fits me the componets are top notch and it barly tips the scale at 26lbs plus I can get a real good deal on it. so what about theses hubs....

there are no problems with them. but i will say this... take a good look at the hubs and take note what type of bearings they use. is it cartridge or free bearings? there were running changes to those hubs. if they are cartridge you will have no problems. just ask the shop to lube the freehub body with some real good oil. most free-hub bodies are not lubed adequitly from the mfg. and dont let them tell you the louder the cliking the better. IT IS NOT TRUE!!!! the louder it is the more it needs to be re-lubed. that goes for ALL freehub bodies.

Oh yeah!! if they are free ball bearing hubs... dont get them. or at least service them every 3 to 6 mos. at least.

The only issues i've heard about are with the freehub bodies not being the strongest. It is a relatively cheap part to replace but a hassle none the less. If you can get a swank deal on it, go for it, you can always upgrade the wheels later or sell them and get soemthing else.

My friend has a '00 sugar 2 and the hubs are in pretty good condition still. They do look kind of cheap but what do I know =)

I agree, if it's a good deal, don't let the wheels stop you from getting it.
