Lately I've had to sell most of my mtb stuff, but yesterday I visited a fellow riders house and he had a whole HUGE drawer full of old parts.

Made me wonder - how many of you hang on to everything, just in case, or for that beater bike build up project and how many of you would rather have as little bike part clutter as possible?

If I had storage space, I'd hold onto everything.

It's fortunate that I don't have the storage space for it.

I have tons of old parts. Probably 25+ tires, spare frame, 3 old forks, 2 extra wheelsets, 5 derailleurs, 5 saddles, several seatposts, 3 cranks w/bottom brackets. I could go on but I don't like typing.

This guy had a ton of cool stuff in his drawer. Lots of old school CNC'd stuff.

I picked up some old XT square taper cranks from him, a Salsa chainring, a RF bashguard, a square taper bb to go with the cranks, a Salsa handlebar, and a couple of 26" tires too.

Now it is on to finding a 27.2 seatpost, some brake levers and a couple of disc wheels. One of the 26" variety and one of the 29" variety. :)

Most of my parts have been sold or put onto frames but I still have a few wheelsets and a big box of tires.

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
I hold on to everything but it seems that I never use any of it. I've never built that beater bike, never had to use a 10 year old derailleur, or recycle that burned out tire for some unknown use. Of course other people know I have the crap and are constantly raiding it for various parts.

Its like my drawer of orphan hardware. I keep every extra screw, bolt and nut I ever get but it seems that I never find what I need in it and always end up buying it new. That being said its usually on the next trip that I find what I was looking for the PREVIOUS trip to the drawer.

I don't ever get rid of stuff. I still have my wheels from my 89 Stumpjumper. Though, most of it is well used or broke by the time it gets put in the 'box'.

I sell my older parts/stuff to finance my new build projects. I only own one bike at a time.:disgust: However, this year, as I continued to break things, I started to collect a good pile of spare parts to fit my current set-up.

I haven't been riding long enough to accumulate too many old parts and the space is very limited around the one bedroom apt. for much stuff. Most of it makes it way to Rob's basement. I'm thinking of building up the hardtail into an SS from some old parts.

Anyone have any spare parts for a cross bike? I'm thinking of picking up a cross frame (Jake the Snake), putting the wheels/ drivetrain, bars from my roadbike on. I just need a fork, cantilever brakes, 1 1/8 threadless headset and a cross crank!

I try to use this logic, but even though I promise my wife that I will sell off old stuff to finance new stuff, the bikes keep piling up. There is way too much crap in my garage. Hopefully, I'll start getting rid of stuff this next year once the latest project is completed.

Most of my parts I have laying around are generic things that I have upgraded from so even when I try to sell them, there is little interest. I hang onto them and sometimes offer them to people that are in a pinch for free.

I often find that I sell something and then three months or so later, I need it again for a different frame. :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:
