the EU thinks so:
Call for EU-wide junk food ban

David Batty and agencies
Thursday May 27, 2004

European legislation would be needed to impose an effective ban on junk food advertising, according to a public health specialist.

Dr Geof Rayner, the former chairman of the UK Public Health Association (UKPHA), said that a national ban on television commercials that promote junk food, such as burgers and fizzy drinks, would be ineffective because of widespread and growing access to satellite TV.

His comments came after the Commons health select committee today recommended a voluntary ban on TV commercials promoting unhealthy food in a damning report on Britain's obesity epidemic.

They did the same thing with cigarettes here. The fact is that most people are either ignorant of the problem or just too lazy to care enough to take care of themselves properly.

Educating/motivating people is really the best solution but most governments seem to be too reactive to think proactively.

but only so far, right? When are we going to let nat-selection take over? This makes as much sense as repealing beer commercials.

Advertising tobacco is a huge no-no in Canada. Has been for decades.

So much so that the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Montreal is always having problems because of the Marlboro, Lucky Strike, (etc) graphics on the cars. A few months back, the Montreal race had actually been removed from the 2004 F1 schedule for a while because of the tobacco advertising laws.. They always seem to get special exceptions for it eventually.

I see you're in a fine mood today stinkle ;) Out to disagree with everyone again...:p See what kind of fur you can ruffle?

I like how in Canada if you buy a pack of cigs the box is nothing but HUGE warning labels...hehe

In response to the natural selection thing...I don't think it's working...We work too many medical miracles for people to be taken out of the breeding pack early enough to prevent them from reproducing.

So you want to force people who exhibit little or no self-control to either a) have their tubes tied or b) have abortions should they manage to breed before we get to them?

If yer gonna troll...at least troll with something pertinent to the subject ;)

Okay, this thread is driving me insane.

People, we think for ourselves when we ELECT the people who make these decisions. If someone's platform while running includes these types of things, than you expect it and want it if you vote for them. If not, you dont. Its not a matter of having the government think for you, its a matter of the government carrying out the will of the people.
