If you are talking out of high school that is very different. You can get into Berkeley out of Jr, college with much lower grades, and SATs don't matter. I know kids getting in with quite a bit lower grades (something like 3.4s 3.5s) and yes I am going to a school with one of the top 3 UC transfer rates
If you can't get in the normal way, find the easy way... Why does this mentality not surprise me from you?

It's *much* easier for transfer students to get in that freshman. That being said, given that the number of students getting admitted will be less over the coming years, I still doubt he'll get it.

But who knows... I knew a LOT of book smart, stupid people at Cal.

As for the comments regarding grades, it's much easier to get A's at Diablo CC than at Cal. Even if he gets in, I doubt he'd get that good of grades unless he chooses one of the hippie-dippie majors that are about emotions and feelings rather than true knowledge (see sciences and mathematics).

I got bounced out of basic Calculus at Cal, but managed to get A's through High Schools AND at SF City College when I went for a refresher. Real sciences and mathematics at Cal are truly elite.
I guess I'm taking a hippie-dippie major by your definition, but political science/ pre-law can land me a good job. I'm actually very good at science/ math, I was one of 2 juniors in my AP calc class.

Take it from me. Unless you have a PHD or another semi related degree (teaching, journalism, etc), a political science degree will NOT get you a good job.

Exactly. Poli Sci is not a science. If you intend to go into politics, you should be taking rhetoric, English, etc and plan on going to Law School.
Mass communications falls into this category as well.

Going into the economic environment we are currently experiencing, you will be far better served with a technical degree of some form. Even if you decide to pursue other avenues, you can not beat a good technical background: accounting, engineering, mathematics, etc. Hard Sciences!

I disagree, if you intend to go into politics you need a good base. A poli sci BA will do this. It will also help you understand a hell of a lot about what is going on in the world today.

However, you have to follow it up with a law degree. A poli sci degree on it's own is incredibly useless.

Left-hand : right-hand... Either way, he will need to be able to fund for another three years of law school. If it isn't a top-15, or Georgetown (see in DC), it's worthless for politics.

Given how *poor* he is, he'll need a degree that allows him to get a job while he goes to law school.

The REAL money in the future economy is drug / pharma / biotech development. One of the few self-sufficient sectors (see minimal govt support, constantly aging population). If I could afford the time.cost, I would go back to school and get another BS in Bio Engineering.

Instead, I'm trying to get my job to pay for me to get a masters in finance.:banghead:

You're from Nor Cal?

DVC (Diablo Valley College) is full of people who have being going there "working on a degree" for more than four years.

Fvck that noise. Join the military.

I am working a degree in Information Technology without doing anything more than my daily job.

In the next few months I will be done with CCAF (community college of the Air Force) AA degree and be able to transfer into a local college.

Less than one year time in service I will be done with a 2 year degree.

I should have joined at 18.

Sounds like a real elite program there. Easily on par with Cal.

Not if you plan on going into constitutional law

I have enough math units to transfer on a mechanical engineering degree right now, I just don't think I want to do math for the rest of my life. There is more to success than a paycheck, I understand I need to make money, but I don't need to get rich.

That's why I have a decent paying job and am living at home, and plan on staying there until I graduate from graduate from Berkeley.

Good for you, but you know damn well the military isn't for me. I'm a full on registered socialist (though the military is one of the most socialistic things EVER) the whole political side of it prevents that. I am on the other had seriously considering joining the peace corps after I get my BA

Back on topic.

My parents raised me well. I know right from wrong. I know how to take care of my responsibilities.
They are totally out of touch with the reality that goes on outside of their home. They are hermits. That being said, they are good parents. They did a good job raising me and my brother. They are nice, but not cool.
