With just two days to the US presidential election, the jockeying for the 2008 Republican nomination stepped up a gear yesterday with an unexpected admission by Arnold Schwarzenegger that he would be interested in running.

On previous occasions the governor of California has sidestepped the question, but asked last night on the CBS programme 60 Minutes if he would support an amendment to allow a foreign-born national to be president, Mr Schwarzenegger said: "Yes, absolutely."

"I think, you know, because why not? I mean, you know, anyone with my way of thinking, you always shoot for the top," he said. "But it's not something that I am preoccupied with. I am not thinking one single minute about that because there's so many things I have to do in California, and my promise was to straighten out the mess in California."
i'm thankful that amending the constitution is not an easy process.

Between a rock and a hard place.
I don't see why somone born in another country shouldn't be able to run. By no means am I advocating Arnie (though we could do worse), but honestly, what is the difference between somone who has spent their entire adult life in the US, and somone who was born here.

I would think that there would need to be a long term residency requirement BUT I agree. My adopted daughter who was born in China and became a US citizen at 14 months old could not run be President.

Do other countries have similar laws?

Haha! Everytime Helicoptor 1 lands Arnie would lead his entourage on a mad dash as he screams.... "Run!!! Get to the choppah!!!!"
Chew tobacco spitoons would have to be placed all over the white house.
And NATO would freak out as the Big Indian would take off his suit top and cut his chest everytime there's a dispute.
Glad i'm not a hollywood Indian, that **** would hurt.....

And of course Carl Weathers to replace Colin Powell as Secretary of State. He's really the only choice.

Didn't Peru have a Japanese President that got impeached for funnelling Peruvian government funds back to Japan?

While I agree that someone who obtained citizenship at 14 months should be eligible, I don't know how I feel about those who came over as adults. If only to avoid any rumors or accusations about where loyalties lie, I think the cutoff should be something like 12 years old. This, despite recognizing that many immigrants are probably more loyal to the US than most citizens could ever be.
