Just found out I did indeed break my scaphoid after being clipped by a car on my way to the Fenway jumps here in Boston, the driver didn't even stop!! 6 weeks in a full arm cast, 4-6 in a short cast, possible surgery  :( . Looks like I will become a very frequent visitor of the monkey now, BAH

¡Phoenix!
I hit a woman's car last night, she thought she had clipped me and just took off. I chased her about 3 blocks (the new Chameleon's pretty quick) and she was swerving and scared to death of me. Ha!

When i broke mine i was 16 weeks in a cast. It has no blood flow after 14 so it's a pain to have heal. Find out about bone stimulators and most importantly DO THE REHAB. If not you will lose a TON of mobility in your wrist.

Pin recipient here. Broke mine last summer. I did about 4 months in a cast like Transcend. I got feed up with no riding, having to shower with a bag on my arm, one handed typing, left handed mousing, blah, blah, blah. Chose the surgery route and am happily riding again. I can't say it's the same and probably never will be, but at least I'm functional again.

Good luck man and definately do your rehab work religeously. :thumb:

Fiber glass cast + goretex liner = no plastic bag. Closest thing to not having a cast you can get.

As fir surgery, i was advised not to for several reasons, basically it will accelerate healing, but can lead to many more complications (including almost certain loss of mobility). I am back to about 90-95% mobility now after 3 years.

gortex liner!!?! please indulge me!!
Instead of that weird cottony liner they put in normally, ask for the goretex one. It is a sheet of little goretex bubbles sort of, and is self adhesive. They wrap you in that, trim, and then wrap you in fiberglass.

You can shower, swim, whatever. It does get a little funky inside if you don't allow it to dry properly..i use a fan or a hairdryer when i had mine (on cool).

Weird. My doctor (and the second opinion) was the total opposite. He saw the x-ray and said "wanna get operated on tomorrow?". He said that the surgery actually lessens the chance of mobility loss because it gets the wrist mobile quicker than casting does. I was back to normal (as best I can figure) in about 5 months. It got sore (more uncomfortable than hurting) on long rides for about 9 to 10 months but since its been pretty good. He does say that long term I'll probably get arthritis in that wrist.

Mine was a complete fracture.

I think it has alot to do with the type of break. Mine was broken into 6 pieces I believe. (it was apparently hard to tell, I heard anywhere from 4-6).

The stiffness from lack of mobility for 16 weeks pales in comparison to the possible loss of mobility from pins/meshes and plates, as well as from complications from the invasive surgery.

Toshi should chime in here..

The biggest piece of advice I can give here is make sure you have an orthopedic surgeon that understands what you do and that you will continue to do it after you heal. That makes all the difference. It also doesn't hurt if he/she is also a sports minded person or sports medicine specialist.

Take their advice and give it time! Nothing kills a healing schaphoid faster than jumping back on the bike too soon.

two to three months will be a breeze. I spent around 5 in a cast after my scaphoid/distal radial shatter. How badly was the break?? If you have surgery, will they have to graft and screw it or just screw it?? Thats whats really going to determine what the recovery will be. Grafts take forever to heal!

Good luck and if you have any questions, I've turned into quite the expert about the hand and wrist this last year! Feel free to PM or e-mail me.

I have to get a Cat Scan next week to see how bad the break is, so I'm not sure what the plan is as of yet, hoping its only a minor fracture, but my doctor couldn't tell definitively.

Sounds like your in good shape then. The more difficult to heal scaphoids are the one's that are visibly displaced. If it's not displaced (just cracked and still lined up right), and they use an Acutrak fixation system, the surgery should be pretty non-invasive and you should heal up pretty quickly (as long as you stay off the bikes while it's healing!!!!!). Good luck and be sure to keep us posted.
