Asking to watch - taboo or not?

I need to get my SID Team overhauled, but would like to watch the shop do it so I can learn some basic maintenance steps... and I know that haven't worked on many (if any) SID Teams with the PURE climb control (so I want to ensure they take care with it).

Is it a huge faux pas to ask to watch and/or lend a hand? Are most shops receptive if you stay outta their way (or lend a hand when they need it)?

Thanks

Only if you don't plunk down at least a 6 pack of cold pops! Some guys won't want an audience, other guys will be happy to accomodate. Probably depends on the shop too and how good your realtionship is i.e. how much $$$ do you spend there.

any shop regardless of bringing beer or not should let you watch. bike mechanics understand this.

I used to work in a shop and if you are always coming in and being an asshole I am not gonna let you watch for all the liquid refreshment in the world. As long as your not a jackass when you come in most wreches don't care if you watch just give them room to do their thing.

yeah, and if you mail order everything and bring it to them and never suport the shop itself your not going to be alowed to watch. i know i let my good customers watch if they want. and even borrow my tools if they are super cool with me.

My shop would not let you watch. Main reason is our shop is in the warehouse and it is too much of a liability to allow someone access to that much inventory. We are not a typical shop though

My LBS don't seem to mind - I was in yesterday getting pedals fitted of all things, I didnt have the right size wrench at home. They didnt mind me watching how it's done, I figure that if I can learn how to do the basics myself I can stop bothering them about it.

Oh, and I also saw (and lifted) my first carbon fiber bike. I want one of those!
