Asleep at the Wheel vs Slayer

I was talking to co-worker who is a huge music buff, mostly jazz, blues, and country (and is 20 years old than I am). He was talking about "Asleep at the Wheel", a Western Swing band, and he played me a song, which I found uninteresting.

On the other hand, his stepson is a big metal fan, which he despises, and I mentioned how I like Slayer quite a bit. Listening to "Reign in Blood" right now, I find it much more interesting.

I wish I could explain Slayer's appeal in more musical terms, but it rocks and Asleep doesnt.

Here's a tougher question:

Who would win in a street fight - Slayer or Pantera?

Aren't all the guys from Slayer protected by demonic forces or something?

Otherwise Pantera would kick their skinny butts!

EDIT: What is the best Slayer album? (I've only got Reign in Blood and South of Heaven, & SoH gets my vote)

Slayer. Kerry King has that spiked gauntlet, he alone could wipe out a small village:devil:

Its just not some peoples cup o' tea.
Doesn't bug me none. If metal was popular I might get burnt out hearing it on the radio.

I tend to like older metal, but Slayer is cool. I have Rusty Cage - Sound Garden on. It's so good, but i'm not sure if it qulaifies as metal.

True, but I'd say their later stuff was SO hard, few would dare make fun of them for their butt rock phase.

You got to be kidding. I saw Superjoint Ritual (to see my hero, Hank3), and Phil Anselmo spent almost the entire show whining.

He then made a mistake I have never seen before: he started to blame the audience for the poor turnout. I yelled back, "What do you want us to do, buy two tickets?"

In comparison, the first time I saw Slayer was at the House of Blues in New Orleans, which you might think would be a bad venue. But the pit, which was relatively small, was the most vicious I have seen. It felt like 10 people behind me were pushing on me, and 10 people in front of me were pushing back.

Doesn't count that's not Pantera.

Who would win in a military skirmish, Pantera or the IDF?

Superjoint Ritual sucks the sweat of a dead rhino's balls. One of the worst bands I've ever heard. I almost threw the disc out the window after listening to half of it. I remember hearing Phil talk about creating the heaviest band ever after leaving Pantera. Superjoint has some of the worst song writing and production I've ever heard. I can't tell if it's lack of talent and creativity or just too much heroin.

Have another needle-full Phil and dream the impossible dream. Heaviest band ever my ass.

Slayer, no contest. I can count how many times I've MISSED Slayer on tour in the past 15 years on one hand. One show we arrived to find the hall had CHAIRS set up on the main floor. It was a very organized effort to foldup and move as many as possible before the lights went out, lest they start flying through the air during the show.

Favorites? old Slayer - Hell Awaits / Kill Again ... the entire Reign in Blood album, pretty much everything except that cover album.

That said, Dimebag was a kajillion times more talented guitarist than Hanneman or King. Pantera was such a groovin metal band. Listen to Far Beyond Driven, that record hurts people from 20 yards away. By coincidence I was just in the Washburn factory yesterday on business and got to meet and talk with the luthier that made and painted all the USA custom guitars for Dime as well as many other past and current endorsees.

Several years back Slayer and Pantera toured together, just before Pantera took that rehab break. Great show.

Lately I've been in a huge Kelly Clarkson phase. It just makes me feel good inside. :dancing:

The sad part about Superjoint Ritual is that I like the rest of band. Lots of New Orleans metal. If they got rid of Anselmo and had Hank 3 front the band....

When I lived in New Orleans I was never very impressed with any of the metal bands. Lots of individually talented musicians but no bands that I could really get excited about. Eye Hate God, Crowbar, etc. just never really did it for me.
