Hello, just wondering if there is any major benifit going from a new 05 XT crankset to a Atlas, the RF weighs about 100g more than the XT, both can use the same bottom bracket bearings ass. which I think the RF unit is a bit better. What about strenght and stiffness? I have been thinking about going to a 170mm crank from a 175, whats your thoughts on this too? The new XT's are nice, just wondering if I should try the new Atlas cranks instead of odering the XT's.

Thanks

Well, if it's any indicator, the track record for Shimano BBs and cranks is pretty damn good. A suprising amount of people use XT cranks on their DH race bikes.

I used a set of XT cranks & Octalink BB for a few years on on XC bike, one 6" FS bike, and my Imperial before they finally died.

I wanted a set of Atlas cranks for my RFX more than anyone but RF's x-type mounting system doesn't seem all that well thought out. Do a search and you'll likely find stories of them not staying tight. Allegedly due to frequent disassembly.

Shimano's assembly is slick. Maybe get hones instead of XT.

The plus with the RF integrated cranksets is that you don't have to buy special tools to install them.

The shimano M760 XT cranks require special tools, 2 of them in fact. These tools come with the M960 XTR cranks, but not the XTs. I like my new integrated BB XT cranks. They aren't DH cranks (and are not on my DH bike), but they are pretty stiff.

What exactly do you use to tighten the RF bb cups?

Park makes a double ended tool that has what you need to install Shimano outboard bearing bbs. The non-drive side bolt is plastic and needs to be torqued to ~6 inch pounds so you could actually tighten that by hand. The bb cups do need a new tool.

I ran one pair of old XTR on my trials bikes for like four years and they never broke(I was decent, did a few pro comps, so they saw some serious abuse). I also still run a pair on my dirt jumping bike that I got well used for free and have run them for the last three years and they have endured numerous cases. So anyway, the hollowtechs can hold up. Ive had poorer luck with RF cranks, but have not ridden the atlas's so I cant help you there.
