Attaching XT Cranks

Can anyone gimie directions - the instructions which came with the cranks did not include illustrations or written information indicating clearly, how to attach the three items in the photo - you know, which one goes on first & so forth.

Sorry I'm such an idiot - but I really don't wanna mess this up.

Thanks very much in advance,

OD

How'd you do the picture so magnified? Did you just use a standard lens and then do "fit to screen" with the pixels or something? And how'd you include the letters?

OK, I installed my XT cranks today (2001 model), and the bolt had a little washer built in to it, so there was no need for C between A and B as it was already on the bolt. But check your bolt to see if you have it. There should be a washer between the crank and the bolt, and another washer between the bolt and self extraction widget (I think that's its proper name :p), that way there's less friction when cranking up the bolt. And make sure you grease EVERYTHING ;) as well as when you fit the actual crank, make sure it's sitting in the splines, look at the splines to see if they're lined up first, then tighten. If it's sitting on top of the splines, when you crank it all down, you'll squash the crank spline. That's a helpful hint I came accross whilst browsing the shimano tech manual.

I set the camera to "up close" mode (a little button on the back of the camera - I dunno what it does, but I use it for close up's & it seems to work okay). I use Paint Shop Pro for my photo edits - it's a free-to-try download - & no, I'm sure it's not as good as Adope Photoshop - but PSP does what I need & I've been upgrading it & using it for years - very inexpensive & easy to use - IMO.

Yeah - I found a similar notice at Parktools.com - that wouldn't be fun to squash the crank spline - ick.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions & help.

Happy riding to all!

first crank goes on spindle - then metal washer - then bolt - then cap.

...in that order. don't put any of the pieces in the arm until the crank is on the bb spindle.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
Yes, true. But a washer is also needed between the bolt and the S-E widget too.

greasemonkey is right it is very important to install the crankarm onto the bb spindle before placing the washer then the bolt then the cap. Use this method every time you install your cranks and the splines will always line up.

largerthan9,

Thank you for your input. I just installed the cranks as per the instructions here.

Just one thing - I don't think I have a special tool for tightening the self-extractor thingy. After tightening the crank bolt to the BB, I threaded the extractor by hand and then added maybe a 1/4 turn using a small allen key through one of the two holes.

I bought an Advanced Tool Kit from Park, but I don't think it comes with a self-extractor tool. Guess I'll shop around Park's web site & look for one.

Thanks everyone very much - thus far the installation is a success, but I'm only 15-20% done.
