Hi,

I have a hard time finding info on the AVA shock, the owner manual gives little info on it. The only relevant info is that the bigger of air chamber the more linear the spring rate is, right? Santacruz says that I should run the bigger air chamber possible while for the hollowpoint it says to not run more than 1/3 of the extra air chamber open.

Does anyone have more info and suggestion on that shock? should I play around with the air chamber or keep it at the max setting without bottoming out? BTW how can I tell if it bottoms out to easily, I know that I have pushed the oring pretty far on the shaft but I never felt like I was bottoming out?

Thanks

I think the wifes bike will be here soon so I'll have to learn soon. Mu impression though was that the feature is really more usefull for those running higher pressures. I think at higher pressures you end up with a harsher ride to prevent bottom out. The larger AVA chamber allows a softer ride because there is more air so the shock doesn't ramp up as quickly.

I suppose you could under inflate the shock on purpose so you get a feel for a bottom out, but you'd want to be careful not to bottom harshly and cause damage. Carry your shock pump with you for the first bunch of rides so you can play. I think the AVA is all about dialing in the feel you want. I did ride a Blur with that shock, but the demo bike had made the rounds of magazine testers (I saw a photo of the bike in MBA) and shops and the AVA adjustment was seized. Wasn't my bike so I wasn't about to service it.

Thanks for the reply, The ava adjustment was probably not seized, it cannot be tuned with air in the shock. Was that it?

there was no manual with the shock, but there are now other bikes in the store with the AVA and I thought they moved while aired up?? I'll have to check that.
