hey all, i just installed a set of brand new avid 7" mechanical disc brakes on my kona. the front works perfectly, but i can't see to get the rear to function at all.

basically, it doesn't seem like pulling the caliper affects the position of the pads at all, like it's disconnected somehow.

also, i can dial the pads in tight on the rotor to align everything but even if i dial both pads all the way out, they still drag on the rotor.

does it sound like the caliper is broken??

It may just be gummed up. You can remove the 'piston' pretty easily. Clean it all up and such and then try again. Also, make sure that you've installed them correctly - only use the lever adjustment to take up extra slack in the cable, not to adjust pad contact, etc. Mostly, as these might be new and gumming up not a problem, I'd say take it all apart and start over paying special attention to the install instructions. Full housing is key to making them work excellent like they should. One more thing, there is an adjustment on the caliper body itself - I can't remember exactly what it does or where it's at exactly, but it has to do with the tension of the return I believe. Locate it and try adjusting it.

If, before the caliper was installed, you or one of your friends, probably one of your friends, twisted the arm around opposite the direction it engages in, the spring that returns the "piston" can get popped off of its retaining pin. I have seen one Avid that was a little to tight and the pads hung up in the caliper, required a small amount of filing to remove the burr and it was ready to go.

Mobius had a problem with his rear caliper right out of the box. The adjusters weren't working and he had to send it back. Maybe they sent you his old caliper :p .

maybe this is too obvious but I'd check to make sure the retaining spring that holds the pads in is properly seated. If it isn't it seems like the pads would flop around in the caliper and cause it to drag no matter how you set up the brake.
