ok, I had a set of avid discs on my previous bike and was stoked with them, got a new bike and put a new set of avids on it.

firstly I was running full housing previously and now am not now, should I go back to full length ?

secondly, the front caliper always seems to be rattling, like there's something loose in side, although stops just great.

lastly, I think there maybe something wrong with the rear inboard adjuster, sometimes doesn't want to move at all and have to clip off the knob and use a pliers on the little middle tab to get it moving, the inboard pad at this stage is stuck, you can't "jiggle" it around like the other pad...am I making sense here ?

hope you guys can give me some advice, they just don't seem to be as great as they were on my other bike

Sounds like they need to be overhauled. Does your front brake have the new style pad retraction/retention spring? If not, the magnet previously used for pad retention may have fallen out. Once you get it moving, can the inboard adjuster be dialed all the way out? Cycling it back and forth and a judicious use of a little lube (w/ pads removed) may free it up.

Good Luck

I've heard some cases where they extended one adjuster or the other too much and got it {adjuster?} stuck... maybe cross threaded? then it wouldn't adjust afterwards without serious pressure.

thanks for the respones, well I took out the pads in the rear. the inboard one was stuck, didn't just "pop" out like the outward one, but once I had given it a giggle it came out, I then could turn the knob freely, so much that I had dialed it completely out ! oops, anygot it back in, it seems so simple in there, that I can't make out what will cause it to get stuck ? I'll see after my next ride if it plays up again.

if it does, should I maybe remove the adjuster again and put a little lube on the threads ?

oh yeah....full housing...yes or no ??

Probably a good idea. Full housing goes a long way toward keeping gunk out of the cable. In the long run, your brakes will feel better longer with full housing.

You say the pad was stuck . Could this be what is making the adjuster hard to turn? There might be a little flash from the casting that is making the pad bind. Take the caliper off the bike so you can look into the slot better and remove and install the pad to see what it is hanging up on. Then dress that off with a small file.
It is also possible, with no cable attached, to turn the caliper arm to far clockwise and pop the return spring out of its groove. This will cause return and sticking problems.

thanks Rev. Chuck, you might be on to something there, cos without the pad in, the adjuster turned no problem, and usually it gets stuck after a ride, so maybe after some hard braking, its causing the stationary inboard pad to get "stuck" somehow and thats why the adjuster ain't moving....hmmmm

weather is crap at the mo so will ride in a day or two and check it out.

cheers.
