Avid rotors?

I have the new avid juicy 5's on my hardtail- all is brand new. 8"fr and 6" rear. After a while (what I assumed was a good break-in) the rear brakes have started to growl- more of a low frequency vibration. This is most noticable at slow speeds. I puled the pads and used a light sandpaper disk on my dremel to "freshen them up" Things were working great for a while and then it came back. This only happens on the rear rotor. Is the rotor a poor design? anyone else have this problem?

I could be your caliper not being centered over the rotor. When the pistons compress, it may be slightly deforming your rotor(ie bending it slightly). Chech to see if your rotor moves to one side or the other when you squeeze the lever; and check your pads to be sure they're wearing evenly.

BTW, be careful using a dremel tool to sand pads. I usually do it by hand so I don't take too much off.

Castle had a similar problem where the rotors would make wierd noises. He ended up using Hayes rotors, which was a temporary solution. He contacted Avid about it and they just sent him the 8" clean sweep rotors.

From the research I have done, it seems that the earlier rotors (wavy vs polygon) were notorious for these vibrations. Avid took care of it by introducing the polygon type rotor. hmm.. ?

Avid (SRAM) has been replacing the polygon rotors with round rotors for those that have noise problems. You can email them for details and they'll have you work directly through the shop or mail order place you bought them from.

its only in the rear.
something else that i found helped alot was to tighten the adapter way down along with the breack its self onto the adapter... cause thats what was causing alot of noise for me... they just come loose over time.
