I found out, that the thing that makes the bike better than others in my opinion is the rearward axle path of the rear wheel. At least on the first 1/3 of the travel.
I love my dwlink trail bike (5") and how it act when encounters square edge bumps. But I found out that on a VPP (my friend trail 5" bike) it's even better.
Of course it is very important that the bike should be pedal able (the dw is great in this area)
But on DH bikes the pedaling is less important, and the square edge/ rear axle pate is more important.
I've demoed a trek EX trail bike and didnt like it compared to my dwlink trail bike. It didnt swallow the square edge bumps.
I now looking to replace my old dwlink trail bike for a new bike (5 or 5.5" travel). And really want a trail bike that pedals good as the dw. And swallow square edge bumps like the VPP.
What do you think?
What makes you prefer one bike on the other?
Where can I find info about axle paths of different bikes?
And if you have any suggestions for me for a trail 5 or 5.5" frame... please say.
thanks
