The only fella I know with an old eliminator is a pretty big guy and he's had his for about 2 years. He rides at a pretty rough place (Northstar) and it seems to have held up for him. The recoil I rode felt a little flexy in the rear end but I only rode it for about half the length of a DH run so I didn't get a real thorough impression by any means. I was curious when it came out last year and wanted to check it out as well.
Neither bike can take anything less than a 38t chainring without severe chain rub and noise, 40t is recomended.
I raced a Eliminator in '02, and the Recoil in '03, and had no problems with them, but my first upgrade was a Avalanche rear shock for both. Both are durable and well built and offer a lot of bang for the buck.
