STREISAND DECLARES 'GLOBAL WARMING EMERGENCY'

THE SUPERSTAR SONGSTRESS SERENADED SAWYER WITH STORM SEASON ASSERTIONS. BUT TO SOME SHE'LL SOUND MORE LIKE A WINDSOCK SINGING LIBERALISM'S GOLDEN OLDIES!

NEW YORK -- This summer's back to back superstorms are proof positive we have entered a new period of "global warming emergency," artist/citizen Barbra Streisand warns.

Streisand is back on the scene to promote her reunion disc with Barry Gibb.

As hellstorm "Rita" churned in the Gulf, Streisand sat down for a promotional interview with ABCNEWS's Diane Sawyer.

"We are in a global warming emergency state, and these storms are going to become more frequent, more intense," Streisand urgently declares.

But Sawyer did not remind Streisand that a Category 5 hurricane struck the Bahamas with 160 mph winds -- when the singer was five years old, in 1947!

And when Streisand was 8 years old, a Cat 5 hurricane -- named "Dog" -- packing 185 mph churned-away in the Atlantic.

When she was 9, a Cat 5 storm named "Easy" ripped the seas with 160 mph sustained winds.

Streisand was 13 years old when "Janet" hit Mexico with 150 mph winds.

Streisand was celebrating her sweet sixteen as "Cleo" formed with 140 mph.

At 18, Streisand read news about "Donna" AND "Ethel" -- both storms carried 140 mph winds and formed 9 days apart in 1960!

One year later, when Streisand was 19, it happened again: Two Category 5 storms scared the world: "Carla" and "Hattie!"

"Carla" maxed out at 175 mph winds the year Streisand made her television debut on "The Jack Paar Show."

And who could forget Hurricane "Camille" -- which smashed into the United States with 190 mph, just as "Funny Girl" garners eight Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture and one for Barbra as Best Actress.

Up next on the weather warning watch, Streisand says to ABC: "There could be more droughts, dust bowls. You know, it's amazing to hear these facts."

Global warming must be bull****. After all, I had to wear my armwarmers once in the middle of the summer.

But hey, I like to see you posting this stuff. Streisand's opinion on global warming is way more valid than an intelligent designer's opinion on evolution...

That article also displays the reporter's ignorance of the science of global warming, and hence makes himself look really smart while attempting to rubbish Streisand's assertion.

I wonder if Barabara has ever had anyone sit her down and tell her to STFU... Seems like now might be a good time for someone to start.

EDIT -- This story would make an awesome Southpark episode though. :dancing:

The strongest hurricanes in the present climate may be upstaged by even more intense hurricanes over the next century as the earth's climate is warmed by increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Although we cannot say at present whether more or fewer hurricane will occur in the future with global warming, the hurricanes that do occur near the end of the 21st century are expected to be stronger and have significantly more intense rainfall than under present day climate conditions. This expectation (Figure 1) is based on an anticipated enhancement of energy available to the storms due to higher tropical sea surface temperatures.
There is a lot of science by a lot of very smart folks in those articles, studies and links.

But when you matriculate the intensity matrix along with the rainfall subjigate data the resulting data looks more like this

Period Total/U.S. Landfalls/Major U.S. Hurricanes
1801-1850/1.5234/9.987
1851-1900/1.5323/9.934
1901-1950/1.5376/9.952
1951-2000/1.5576/9.923

As you can see, this all points towards a global spicy burrito emergency.

Well Chang, certainly the US stats are not representative of the global hurricane trends (which btw blow Bab's argument even further out of the water). But since these dolts insist on using local phenomena to "prove" their rubbish arguments surrounding the global spicy burrito crisis it seems appropriate to disprove said claims with actual facts related to said local phenomena.

I think we can all agree that Babs is a dolt, and I'd hope we all agree that Global Warming is real. Otherwise we might be accused of being at home to Mr. Headinthesand.

Copied from a transcript of "MSNBC LIVE" 20 Sep 2005:

According to Stanley Goldenberg, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is no specific reason.

"What people have to realize is that we're in a part of an active long-term cycle in hurricane activity. What happens in the Atlantic is that you have several decades of below normal activity, and then you have several decades of above normal activity," he said.

"This is a cycle we can trace back hundreds of years. Since 1995, we've been in this higher cycle of activity," Goldenberg said.

Goldenberg said that while a warmer Atlantic Ocean contributes to the additional hurricane activity, global warming isn't to blame.

"The main environmental factor is a change in ocean temperatures in the Atlantic. We're not talking about long term global warming, we're talking about a cycle that goes up and down -- a little bit warmer for a few decades and a little bit cooler for a few decades. That's really what we're seeing," he said.

Where we are currently in that cycle, according to Goldenberg, does not bode well for the Gulf and Atlantic coast states.

"We do not expect this to switch back soon. We might be in another decade or several more decades of above average activity," he said.

The only thing people can do, Goldenberg noted, is be ready for anything.

"People really need to accept and face reality with this," he said. "I hope that Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita forces emergency mangers, government officials and private individuals to reexamine their hurricane preparedness efforts.

"People need to prepare for the worst, because it can happen," he said.

From what I have read before, sorry can not provide sources, the big problem with global warming isn't the small average increase in temps but how the small increases in temps will disrupt the delicate balance in ocean currents that exists today. It has been estimated that this will actually have a cooling affect on the Atlantic coast, seems like this goes against the theory that the Hurricanes are a symptom of GW.

What is a symptom of global warming and should be alarming to coastal communities and governments around the world is the rapid loss of Antarctic ice shelfs.

Bravo!!! Couldn't have put it any better.

Does anyone take Bab's seriously besides 50 year old single women? Global warming is real, and no scientist in his right mind has said that global warming IS causing increased hurricanes.

The real issue isn't if global warming is causing increased hurricanes or not. It is that global warming exists. Babs has the right intentions and has her heart in the right place, but she's a moron.

Indeed. It' interesting for the UK as like you said one of the common predictions for the effects of warming is a alteration of the flow of the gulf stream, (a current of warm water that currently flows north and helps keep the UK warm - London is actually at the same latitude as Moscow) If the gulf stream moves even a small amount, the British Isles will probably end up being considerably colder than it is now. Global Warming is complex. It could mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

Whilst you are correct about the predicted effects for the Gulf Stream London is actually 5 degrees further south that Moscow, in fact Edinburgh is about the same as Moscow. This is an inaccurate 'fact' I often hear quoted.

Also you must bear in mind that Edinburgh (and indeed London) whilst much warmer than Moscow in winter are also much cooler than Moscow in Summer. This is due not only to the Gulf Stream but the fact that Moscow is much further inland than anywhere in the UK can be.

As the UK is only a little further north than France and the climate slightly cooler the effect of the Gulf Stream is either overstated or mistated. There are many other factors governing the UK climate and weather patterns.

What's 5 degrees between friends? Yes, clearly there are many other factors, the main point is (as you've helped demonstrate very well): World = Complicated as fvck. All the postings on RM probably couldn't come near explaining even one aspect of it. That's why we have many thousands of scientists around the world, to think, investigate and worry about this **** for us. We owe it to ourselves to listen to what they tell us, and to be careful to note who is paying their wages.
