Okay now try this one on for size.

Mike is fleeing from a stampeding herd of buffalo when he somes to a wide deep river. To escape he must cross it, but there is no bridge and he has no boat or materials to make a boat. He cannot even swim. Nonetheless he gets away safely.

Why is Mike able to cross the river and why don't the buffalo follow?

clues:
Buffalo are excellent swimmers.
The buffalo are large, and can weigh up to 1000 lbs.
